100-Year-Old Woman Celebrates Life At Worthing, Says God Has Helped Her Through

Evelyn, a 100-year-old woman, is celebrating a century-long and faith-filled life at Worthing Tabernacle Church.

She grew up as an only child and was born in 1923. Evelyn had been moving to different places over the past few decades. Perhaps she loved traveling and exploring different scenery.

She said, “I love nature and the land, but I get dermatitis from the soil, so I had to go back to the office with the Civil Service. I was so upset; I just loved the fresh air and the outdoors, and I am fond of nature.”

This was the reason she had to change to clerical work instead of enjoying serving in the Land Army during the Second World War. Her skin condition got in the way of what she loved doing.

Meeting Her Husband

Evelyn loved to play the piano, too. And aside from playing the instrument, she also runs a stationery shop, a guest house, and a Christian holiday home with her husband.

Evelyn said, “We specialized in beautiful birthday cards. We picked every one by design. People would come from all over. But we weren’t ruthless enough for business. Our accountant said we were too soft.”

Having three children, they had family challenges and struggles as well. Gerald worked odd jobs like clerical work and installing central heating, while she worked part-time at the Inland Revenue in Durrington. They went through a lot in their marriage and family, yet they were sustained by their faith in God.

Gerald Passes Away At 60

“I was very devoted to my husband. It left a big hole,” Evelyn said.

After returning to her Worthing home, she made the decision that she wanted “to do something useful.” She became the pianist at Worthing Tabernacle soon after joining the church and worked for many years in the church’s shop, Chapel Gift & Books.

“Our Christian belief was the main thing in life,” she said, “and it was a great help to me because I met people and felt I was doing something useful.”

Now, she’s a 100-year-old woman and very content in life.

“I really am thankful for God and he has helped me through the years. My faith has been very important to me. I have been very, very thankful for everything I have got and the kindness of people. I have been very content,” she said.
