5 Unbiblical Statements

As Christians, we should be constantly seeking out Truth from the Bible for wisdom, direction, and correction. This involves reading more than just a single verse here and there, but instead diving in deep and searching for the true meaning and context behind a verse. If we are not careful, we can easily create a statement about God that is unbiblical.

Pastor Jack Wellman believes that there are many statements that Christians are incorrect for believing. He hopes that by sharing the truth behind these verses, Christians everywhere will have their eyes opened to see the truth behind these statements.

Here are five statements that some Christians believe that are not correct.

Unbiblical Statement: Words Aren’t Always Necessary for the Gospel to be Taught

Believing in this statement would be so wrong as throughout the New Testament Paul writes about needing the words for sharing the Gospel of Christ. Pastor Wellman uses Romans 10:17 as an example for this truth. The verse says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Words are always necessary for sharing the Gospel.

Unbiblical Statement: God Promises Happiness

Although there are promises of joy found throughout the Bible, never once does Jesus promise that following him means that we will have total happiness in our circumstances. In fact, he declares the very opposite. In John 16:33 Jesus says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Unbiblical Statement: We Are All God’s Children

There is some truth to this statement – however, as Pastor Wellman points out we should be careful with the word “all” in this statement as not everyone is God’s child until the point of salvation. In 1 John 3:10 the Apostle John writes, “it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”

Unbiblical Statement: God Will Never Give Us More Than We Can Handle

Pastor Wellman writes that nowhere in the Bible does God state that we will never have to endure hardships past the point of what we can handle. In fact, we already learned above that God actually says that we will experience trouble in this world. Many Christians use Paul’s writing in 1 Corinthians 10:13 to back up this false statement. In the verse Paul writes, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” Pastor Wellman says that the meaning behind this verse is actually that God will never allow us to be tempted past what we can handle – which is different from the actual hardships we will have to deal with.

Unbiblical Statement: Bad Things Happen to Good People

In Romans 3:10-12 Paul writes that “none is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God…no one does good, not even one.” Pastor Wellman simply states here that this phrase should actually just be that bad things happen to all people as we “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) There is no one who is good – “only bad people who are forgiven and made right and cleansed by a very good God,” writes Pastor Wellman.
