Where should someone start if they haven’t read the Bible? Have you ever wanted to start studying the Bible but don’t know where to start?
Here are the five key tips on how to study the Bible for beginners or if you just need a refresher:
Always start with prayer
Prayer helps you set aside the distractions for the day and start being present in your moment with the Lord. It also allows you to put aside your pre-conceived ideas and things that you think you already know. And also allows you to enter into scripture with an open mind and to be able to hear what God is speaking.
Develop a habit of consistency
Choose a specific time of the day when you could study the Bible consistently. There’s no specific time of the day that’s best, it’s just about what works well for you. The important thing is consistently.
Differentiate descriptive and prescriptive parts of the Bible
This tip will help you understand the Bible a lot more clearly. There are two categories of scripture: the descriptive and the prescriptive.
Just because you see Samson killing thousands of Philistines with a jaw bone of a donkey, doesn’t mean that you should do it. Parts of the Bible simply describe things that took place in history and many times these examples aren’t for imitation. The Bible shows a God that is able to work through imperfect people.
Parts of the Bible simply describe what took place while other parts prescribe things for you to do; instructions for holy and health living.
Start with reading with one of the four Gospels
If this is the first time that you’re opening up the Bible, we strongly encourage you to read about the life of Jesus. We suggest starting with the book of John.
If you’re already familiar with the life Jesus, we suggest starting with the book of Proverbs. It has easy to apply principles about living a life better.
Find a friend or a mentor who could help you learn more about the Bible
In any area of your life, the best way to ensure that you grow is to have someone to guide and encourage you. Get involved with a great local church, a small group, or Bible Study to help you dig deep into the Word of God.
We hope that these tips help you start your daily walk with the Lord!
