A woman’s family refused to “pull the plug” when doctors advised them to do so, she then miraculously woke-up after 7 months in a coma.

Kertisha Brabson

In September 2018, Kertisha Brabson, a 31-year-old mother of two from Alliance, Ohio, was suddenly acting strangely. She was doing strange things like reaching out to things that were not there and dancing like she was at a concert.

Kertisha’s mother, Kertease Williams, knew that something was not right. Kertisha then had a seizure that placed her in a coma for several months.

“Something has taken over and is ruining my daughter,” Kertease Williams said. “I just don’t know what.”

“Pull the plug”

Eventually, doctors diagnosed her with Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, a disease where the body fights the brain cells. Doctors lost their hope for Kertisha and advised her family to stop her life support, but Kertease would not give up.

“We were going to keep moving her because once I saw the doctors scratching their heads that clearly let me know they gave up and they don’t know what’s going on with her,” Williams said. “They told me she was brain-dead and to pull the plug and all those things.”

7-Months in a coma

Kertease was fighting for her daughter and for Kertisha’s children.

“Every decision that I made was because she got two little people that were depending on their mother to come home, and that was her kids,” Williams said.

On their third hospital transfer, Kertisha was moved to Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State. Once there, Dr. Shraddha Mainali, who specializes in stroke and neurocritical care at Ohio State’s Brain and Spine Hospital, did his best for Kertisha.

The Miracle They Prayed For

On April 7, a miracle happened that the Williams family will never forget.

“One of my residents who was on-call at night texted me in the morning and says you won’t believe what I saw today,” she said. “I was like, what happened? [I was told] Tisha is opening her eyes and she’s following simple commands.”

“And he said well, she woke up,” Williams said. “Oh, my goodness, we just jumped up and down and screamed and nobody slept that morning.”

Kertisha was shocked to know that she had been in a coma for seven months. She never knew what happened during that time, but she believes that what happened to her was a miracle.
