A 75-year-old woman from Iowa was honored for her selfless love and care in fostering more than 500 kids.

Linda Hering and her husband Bob have been opening their home to foster kids for more than five decades. Any child who is in need of a stable family home are welcome in their home in Oxford, Iowa.

Fostering Love

 

Linda told CNN in an interview, “My best friend was doing foster care for teenage girls and I thought, ‘Well, that would be nice to do the same,’ but I wanted little kids. So, I talked to the Department of Human Services and agreed to take kids with medical needs.”

Since then, Linda has been helping and loving kids no one was taking. Because her life philosophy was very simple: “If no one else can love them or take care of them, I will.”

Resolution Of Appreciation

And on January 9, the Johnson County Department of Human Services’ Board of Supervisors acknowledged Linda’s life work with a “Resolution of Appreciation.”

The resolution reads, “The Department of Human Services could call Linda in the middle of the night to take a child, and she would meet anywhere to get a child.”

It also reads that she “mostly fostered young children and children with “special medical needs.” She always had a stockpile clothes of different sizes and gender ready all the time.

“No one had to worry about a child going without clothes at Linda’s, even if they arrived with nothing but what they’re wearing,” according to the resolution.

The Fruit Of Her Unconditional Love

And on top of fostering children, Linda also dedicated herself in a daycare for local families. She also became a night custodian in an Iowa high school. Moreover, she has been a first responder volunteer for nearly half a century.

Today, one of the kids Linda welcomed into her home is now 39 years old, Anthony Herring. He was three years old when they adopted him.

“I appreciate being adopted even more today as a parent then I did when I was a child,” Anthony told CNN. “I’m forever grateful for the life I was given. She and Dad have both taught me that family isn’t determined by blood. It’s who you have in your life to love.”

Linda’s granddaughter, Amber Herring, also revealed to TODAY that her grandma “has always put everyone else before herself.”

“It takes a special person to open their heart and home to children,” she continued. “It has been a lifestyle for them that not everyone can do. But their dedication to children in need has always been evident. They simply provided them love when the kids needed it most.”
