A boy who was tragically crushed and killed by a 4-wheeler becomes an organ donor to save the lives of 54 people.
Cameron Greer Dice
On March 17 of the year 2018, the 19-year-old Cameron Greer Dice took a trip with a few neighbors to a family camp in Franklinton, Louisiana. While he was riding his ATV up a steep ditch, the vehicle tipped backward, completely crushing Cameron.
“He was climbing a steep ditch, and when he got to the top, he was very going very slow because you can’t go fast climbing that,” his mother, Amy Deubler Foy, said. “When he got to the top, very top of the ditch, the four-wheeler fell back. It flipped backward on him, and it crushed him, it crushed his face.”
When he was airlifted to UMC in New Orleans, he already stopped breathing and had no heartbeat. The medical team’s efforts to revive the teen failed.
“Me and his dad sat Sunday night after everybody left the hospital, and his dad said, ‘I think he might already be gone,’” recalls Amy. “I felt it, but I didn’t want to believe it. I just prayed, I just wanted a miracle, but I think God, I think God needed him more.”
Remembering what they talked about being an organ donor two years ago, Amy honored his son’s request to save lives.
“When you do pass away, they will keep all of your organs alive and they will take them from you and they will give them to other people to save their lives, people that are gonna die,” she explained to him. “And he said, ‘Oh yes. Definitely.’”
Despite being devastated by the loss of his son, Amy found a sense of peace knowing that her son died as a hero. His pancreas, liver, kidneys, and heart saved four people before his funeral. All of his other organs also were able to help dozens more.
“As far as I know, 54 people have part of my baby with them,” said Amy.
One day, she would like to meet the people whom Cameron helped. The grieving mother also hoped that his son’s life will encourage others to also become organ donors.
