A young boy in Ney York City with terminal brain cancer receives patches and prayers from military and law enforcement officers.

John Francis Hoague-Rivette

On May 14, John Francis Hoague–Rivette was diagnosed with a Grade 3 Glioma (brain cancer) on his brain stem. It all started earlier this year when he experience 45 minutes-long seizures and was in and out of the hospital for a series of tests.

“I need to go home [heaven]”

Initially, doctors thought it was just inflammation in the cerebellum but after several tests, doctors confirmed that John had cancer. John’s condition continued to deteriorate until one night, he said to his mom Carrie that he’s ready to be with God.

“I need to go home [heaven],” the 11-years-old boy said to his mom.

Military officers

Despite the situation, his family continued to fight and pray for him. It wasn’t long before John received support and prayers from strangers!

John had always admired the military and law enforcement. When the Washington County Sheriff’s Department heard his story, they knew they had to do something. They appointed him as an honorary Captain for the Sheriff’s office. In addition, he also received challenge coins, patches, pins and heart-melting letters from others in the law enforcement community.

“He loves the history and story behind each coin and pin because they are all so unique to the unit or entity that designed them. He’s had them on display during each of his hospital stays. And now they decorate his living room as he lays in his hospice bed,” Sarah, John’s aunt wrote.

Act of kindness

John was delighted by this act of kindness by random strangers and his family was strengthened by their support.

“Carrie has read every letter to John and let him hold and see every coin, patch, and pin. Our entire family has been strengthened by these small acts of kindness,” Sarah added.

They are still holding to their only hope and still believe that God will do a miracle for John! The family is asking for our prayers for their little warrior.

“We know God has a plan in all of this and we are trusting that plan and enjoying every day with John that we have,” Sarah shared.
