Bread crumbs. Sparrows love them and for a sparrow, a single bread crumb is a lot and is enough.
For humans, bread crumbs to sustain a healthy way of eating would NOT be a lot and would NOT be enough.
Bread Crumbs in Relationships
I think that there is a lot of “breadcrumbing” going on in human relationships! I wonder if this is even a term used because in and of itself it makes so much sense. We offer others just a little of ourselves or they offer us the same; just enough to maintain some sort of relationship, but not really enough.
Lo and behold Google defines “breadcrumbing” this way – “A deceptively cuddly term that describes leading someone on by contacting them intermittently to keep them interested.”
Whoa. THAT reminds me of the devil. Think about it. He really only offers mankind, crumbs. He’s like the Pied Piper who enticed others to follow him while offering nothing but destruction.
Breadcrumbing – seems like a “just in case I need you for anything later” kind of relationship. I will just throw out some crumbs every once in a while to make sure you stay put in my life. Yikes. THIS is NOT a relationship you want, is it? Sadly though, we have all probably experienced this. It happens slowly – that is the key to its effective measure. We get a few crumbs – we follow – we get a few more – we keep going – and, repeat.
We never realize we are going nowhere until we become slaves to the hunt.
God Gives Us His All
God, on the other hand, offers us His ALL. He doesn’t lead us with mere crumbs and false hopes and destructive paths that never go anywhere. He invites us to be seated at His table! We are His guests of honor. BIG difference from the devil. “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows (runs over).” (Psalm 23:5-6) How many times have we heard Psalm 23? The beautiful psalm that speaks of God as our shepherd. I think this Psalm was meant to be a visual for us to see with the eyes of our mind and soul, that we matter SO much to God that He treats us with such value and loving care.
Imagine being a homeless person on the street, and someone comes up to you and not only offers you a seat at his dinner table but also a key to his home. That’s what God offers each of us! And even more, God will CARRY those who cannot get to the table without help.
Crumbs: Never Enough
Does satan ever truly satisfy his followers? No. He leaves them always wanting more; he is the leader of the pack of “NEVER ENOUGH”. His offers are null and void of value and loving care.
If you see this pattern in relationships you have, you may want to stop and examine them. Real relationships go the distance; they offer their all in every season; they are the ones who have God’s love “shed abroad in their hearts.” (Romans 5:5)
Only God’s love will pull out a chair for you at a banquet table. Solely God’s love will satisfy you. Only God’s love will bring you peace and the ability to quit striving. Solely God’s love truly refreshes your soul. Only God’s love won’t offer you mere bread crumbs. Ironically, He is called “The Bread of Life” (Knowing God, I am sure this is NOT irony here). God offers you the WHOLE loaf – all of Himself, all of His promises, all of His blessings, all of His love, and all of His best gifts just for YOU.
Bread Crumbs: Final Words
And referring back to a tiny Sparrow bird –
“But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not, therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:30-31)
See yourself as God sees you. See your own worth and your own value, so that you will easily spot a ‘bread crumber’ and you will know you are worth SO much more! God is the God of enough and MORE than enough!
