A bus driver is being hailed as a hero after taking a detour from his usual route to make sure a passenger was able to her mom at a senior home.
This year has been a tough one for everyone, and during this Christmas season, more people are trying to help one another. That is the case for a bus driver who is being hailed as a hero for helping a woman see her mother for the first time in months.
Jacqueline Mason was on her way to meet her 79-year-old mom, Eileen McGrugan, who lives in an assisted care facility. Due to COVID-19 protocols, she hasn’t been able to see her mother for months and visits are limited to pre-scheduled half-hour time slots.
As she rushed to meet her mom, Jacqueline mistakenly got on the wrong bus. Her 30-minute scheduled visit was fast approaching and she was worried she’d miss it. With tears in her eyes, she explained her situation to the bus driver, Alec Bailey.
“I started crying, and I said, ‘I’m not too sure if I’m on the right bus,’” Jacqueline said in an interview.
After hearing her story, the bus driver decided to take a detour from his usual route. Other passengers also agreed to help Jacqueline, Alec drove her to the senior home.
“When the woman said to me she hadn’t seen her mum in a long time, it just hit my heart,” Bailey told the BBC. “A lot of people have suffered this year and you’ve seen on the news. People not able to see their mother or their father in the homes and it just struck a chord with me… I just said to myself, I have to get this woman as close as I can to that home.”
The story made it on the news and everyone is celebrating the feel good story. Despite being an internet celebrity and having everyone praise him, the bus driver remained humble and was just happy to help.
“The smile and the joy on her face just said it all and I was just so pleased,” he tsaid. “It was just a nice, magical moment. It was just the right thing to do.”
