Having community around you fosters health and growth in your walk with Christ. We all make up the body, and need one another to sustain, pour life, and edify one another.
“Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
Keeping community around you maintains accountability
Have you ever had a friend who always checks in on you? Cultivating healthy friendships takes work. The communication and vulnerability required to build trust with one another is a lot like the connection we build in our relationship to Jesus. We are meant to continually share and talk about our lives with the Lord. When we do this in our friendships, other believers can provide wisdom and hold us accountable to our walk with Jesus and the life we are called to live.
The power of unity
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.” (Acts 2:42-44)
As we live alongside one another, letting our community into our lives, witnessing our struggles and celebrating our victories, we make space for the supernatural to occur. The typical western way of life often isolates. We keep to ourselves, and filter our lives to impress those we may keep close to us. Consider the church described in the book of Acts. Breaking bread together takes time to prepare and share a meal. It doesn’t leave room for pretenses, but opens space for authenticity. In that space, the miraculous nature of the Holy Spirit can reside.
