A couple in California took on a new mission as they take care of 5 sisters who lost their mother to COVID-19. They trust God with their new big family.

5 sisters enter into a new family

Fidencio Jacobo never expected that his younger sister, Jasmine Trujillo, would pass on before him. Sadly, the coronavirus claimed Jasmine’s life.

“We never expected this. My sister’s 33 years old,” he said.

A few days earlier, Jasmine was able to talk to her children in a video call. So, when the tragic news came, Fidencio rushed home to his nieces. He recalled, “Hearing their cries was the worst thing. Those screams still haunt me. Every time I think about it, I hear those cries, and it breaks my heart. Nobody should have to experience that.”

To keep the sisters from going to foster care, he and his wife, Crystal, took the responsibility of becoming second parents to the children. “It was hard, but it was something that had to be done. They’re family, so it didn’t matter. My family went from three to eight,” Crystal said.

Esmeralda Trujillo, one of Jasmine’s daughter, told NBC News that they are happy with their new family. But, they still miss their mom. “I just miss my mom and wish she could be here with us. I pray up to God and her to just keep my other family safe and do not let them pass.”

God-given mission

The couple who has a 4-year-old child welcomed the 5 children, ages 6 to 15, and took them as their own. “I put all my trust in God,” Fidencio said. “He’s been with us, he’s blessed us, and he’s seen us through so much. But we know we have a new mission. We have a new purpose.

“Through the storm, there is a rainbow. Even though Mom’s not here, they have a lot of families that love them and will always be there for them. If we can make an impact on their life, then I think that our mission will be accomplished,” Crystal shared.
