Building a house starts with the foundation. And the foundation determines how your house will hold up.
It will either stand the test of time and weather any storms, or over the years you will start to see cracks in the walls and it will eventually begin to crumble.
They same thing is true for our personal houses: our lives, our mind, body and soul.
The House that Fell
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27
Let’s look at the man who built his house on the sand. As the storm came, I imagine he’s inside freaking out and trying to save his home. No matter how much he tries on his own to get buckets to catch all the rain coming through the roof and push out the sand that keeps coming through, or putting back up a wall that came down, it won’t work.
There’s was probably a lot of fear and worry that he’s losing his house!
It all starts with a strong foundation. He can try all he wants but when the storm comes the house doesn’t hold up.
The House that Stayed Standing
Now let’s look at the man who built his house on the rock. He used wisdom and had a strong foundation. And as the rains came down, he didn’t have to worry because he knew his house will hold.
I imagine he and the family are cozied up with a blanket and some tea watching a movie together. The same storm came to each house but he didn’t have to worry because he knew his house would stand.
How the Parable Applies Today
Jesus taught us this so we can know how to weather the storms of life.
When we build our lives on culture, movies, what other people think, what our emotions tell us, etc. then we are building our house on sand.
When we build our house/life on the Word of God, the Bible, that is building our lives on the rock. We let the words and actions of Jesus lead our lives and choices. That is how we build a strong foundation.
And when the storms of life hit – losing a job or loved one, waiting for a promise to be fulfilled, someone does something against you, sickness or disease, etc – your house will stand firm. You won’t partner with fear or worry because you will know your life is built on the rock. And that Rock is Jesus.
