Before the great Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias went home to be with the LORD, he sat together with author and speaker Francis Chan during a Q&A session in 2019. And Francis brought him to tears.
During a Church Leaders Conference at the Zacharias Institute last year, the late Ravi Zacharias and Pastor Francis Chan were invited on stage for a Q&A session.
The event description states: “What does it look like for the church to be reconciled to God, to forgive one another as the Lord forgave, and to live out our message of reconciliation in a deeply-divided culture?”
Warning Against US Churches Getting ‘Too Comfortable’
Here, both of the well-known Christian leaders warned US churches against getting too comfortable. While Ravi commended and acknowledged America’s generosity for initiating world missions all over the globe, he said the risk is always there.
“Whenever you have a plentiful in supply, we just have to take it as from the hand of God and not see it as a license to get free of any responsibility,” the apologist pointed out.
Francis Chan & Ravi Zacharias
Ravi also mentioned what he liked about Francis Chan. He said that his passion makes him feel like he’s sliding into oblivion. Jokingly adding that “he is like a conductor in the whole world’s orchestra” and that he used to be like that but got older.
Meanwhile, Francis discussed Jesus’ new commandment. In John 13:34-35, Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
Then the Crazy Love author spoke of the great scholar Ravi Zacharias. He recounted the first time he met the apologist. Francis admitted that every time he meets a scholar he always feels intimidated and insecure. But when he met Ravi during an event where they were both going to speak, that all changed.
A Great Christian Scholar Filled With Love
Francis recalled, “I remember he comes up to me and just hugs me. And tells me how much he loves me. He thanks God, I think he started praying ‘God, it is such an honor to share the stage with this man, Francis. I’m so honored.’”
While Francis recalled that moment when he felt so loved by the Christian apologist, Ravi kept wiping away tears.
Francis further added, “It was so foreign to me to be loved by a scholar and valued by one.”
Then he concluded that our number one call as a follower of Christ is to love one another deeply. “For this oneness in the church” is a commandment from God.
