We become who we surround ourselves with
The people we need most in our life may come to us unexpectedly. For years, I longed for a mother and father figure to come alongside me as mentors. I wanted people that I could get to know, and who would believe in me, encouraging my faith. Then I met the Robbins family on a mission trip. Like a loving mom and dad, they invited me into their life, pouring encouragement and the true love of the Father into me. Are you longing for a parental figure or godly friend to walk with? It’s worth evaluating who and where you spend your time most now.
Who do you walk with?
“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” (Proverbs 13:20)
Considering this, evaluate the people you spend the most time with. Think about their character. How do they speak about themselves, their family, friends, and workplace? Where do you regularly see them? At work, church, or a community group? Sometimes the time we spend with people most is not necessarily intentional. All too often, we think just because we see a friend in passing at church once or twice a week, we have a rich relationship. While this is an incredible way to see your community, it is in the one on one times of purposeful connection that family is birthed. And I believe we become most like our companions.
Like I did with the Robbins family, truly express your desire to connect with the wise people God has brought into your life. It is our responsibility to steward the relationships that we have been given. The people you need and desire to have in your life may be closer than you realize. Pray and ask Holy Spirit to reveal the wise in your life today.
