“They were glad to hear the report and praised God. And they talked no more about going to war against them to devastate the country where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived.” Joshua 22:33
The tribes of Reuben and Gad did not cross with their cousins to the other side of Jordan. Instead, they preferred to dwell in the land across it. So, they built an altar of remembrance as a witness for the future generations that they are of the same nation – Israel.
But, the other tribes misunderstood. They thought that they were already offering an altar to a different god. They quickly took arms and were ready to wage war against them.
Thankfully, before they would come into unnecessary bloodshed, they listened and cleared things.
The tribes’ immediate reactions are familiar to us. We sometimes make hasty decisions before trying to listen. When, in fact, listening can help destroy worthless fights.
It all comes down to love. Because in love, we hope to understand others more than seek our own justification. Jesus modeled this kind of selfless love. And we, too, can humble down for others’ sake. Shalom.
