For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8
God, in His divine power, has provided us with everything we need to live a godly life. But, at the same time, we also have to do our part. We will need to access the divine attributes God poured on us.
Peter exhorted to “make every effort” to live a fruitful life in knowing Christ. In our faith in God, let us add goodness. Because there are many who believe in God and yet, they don’t have a good heart. Even demons believe in God, but they are evil. So, let us add to our faith goodness that is shown in actions.
And in our goodness, let us add knowledge. Because there are many sincere, but they are sincerely wrong. So, embrace the principles of God by reading the Bible. It guides us to the right path.
In our knowledge, add self-control. Knowledge has the tendency to puff up. We need self-control to keep ourselves from the pride of being knowledgable.
Self-control is then partnered with perseverance. It helps us endure to finish the race towards godliness. And then mutual affection or love. We perfectly reflect God in our love for others.
The list may be long, but it is a great step in growing intimacy with the Lord. Shalom!
