As we have become a believer in Jesus and get baptized by the Holy Spirit, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift is a tool for us to become effective witnesses of Jesus to the world.
In Romans 12, Paul listed out different kinds of gifts. He said, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” (Romans 12:6-8)
But, he also said to “desire the greater gift” (1 Corinthians 12:31). So, which is the greater gift out of the many?

Now, the greater gift is the gift specifically needed the most at your time of ministering. For example, if there is a sick person, then the gift of healing is needed. If someone is discouraged, then the gift of exhortation.
So, what gift is greater? All gifts are needed to someone in their particular time of need. Ultimately, every gift’s purpose is to lead people closer to Jesus and find their way home in the arms of God. Shalom!
