I want to share a verse with you in Malachi that has always fascinated me. And I just want to process with you the things that I find so fascinating about it. In Malachi 3:10, God says, “‘Bring the full tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test,’ says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.'”
In all of the word we understand not to test the Lord, your God, but here He says, “Test me in this.” And He’s talking about the tithe, He’s talking about our faithfulness and our obedience in bringing money to Him. I just find it really fascinating that this is an area that He tells us we can test Him. And we can hold onto our finances so tightly in a way that it makes it really, really hard to be tested. You know, if we aren’t willing to open our hands and actually test God in this, we lose the benefit that He says, you know, “Test me in this, that I will throw open the windows of heaven and bring down blessings” that it’s going to overflow.
Like I want to test Him and that I want to know what that looks like. You know, I remember when my husband and I were first learning how to tithe, that it felt really, really hard. You know, I kept thinking, gosh, that 10% I could be putting towards my breaking down car. I could be putting it towards a vacation. I could be doing all of these things. Like it was, it was really hard. It was really hard to even think about tithing, but we did. We decided, okay, God, you said to test me in this, and so we’re going to try it. And so we began to tithe, we began to live open handedly with our finances and we saw this happen. We saw this happen time and time again, where we would get unexpected raises or bonuses would come through whenever we thought we were going to have lack, because of giving, or being generous with our money, there was always enough.
I remember, it was the first time we had ever been given the opportunity, invited into doing a first fruits offering where the church had people pray about, you know, what do you want to give above and beyond? And I remember we prayed about it and it was the first time that we had given this large of a number. And we wrestled with it. We really wrestled with it, but we felt like that was what the Lord was asking for us. Like that was our next step in learning how to be faithful. We kind of mastered the tithe at this point, and this was a new big step for us.
And, and so we did, we gave this amount and then within days of that, my husband found out that he needed new tires and something else happened. You know, a couple of different things that are on larger scale for amounts of money came through that we needed. And just in the nick of time, my husband got a job that was so easy that the finances just came in for every single one of those things.
And so I just want to encourage you. If the Lord is asking you to trust Him with your finances, to learn how to be obedient with your finances, you can absolutely do it. He’s faithful in this area. And I can tell you it’s true because I know, And I just want to pray over you.
God, I thank you that you are so faithful to us, God, and that you take the things that are hard and you walk us through it, hand-in-hand, God. You show us Lord, that when we live open-handed you have upgrades available. Lord, when we are able to be trusted with pennies, you show us nickels, dimes, and quarters. Lord, that’s just who you are, and that’s how you work. I thank you Lord, that there is a grace to do the things that are hard for us. And I thank you, Lord, just for the heart, the heart to want to be obedient in your name, Lord. Amen.
