Grieving Is Holy Ground
Grieving Is Holy Ground

We are walking with a lot of people through a lot of hard things, and it’s got me thinking a lot about grief and the role it plays in our lives.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Grieving is holy ground. When hard things come and we get hit with grief, we think it’s the destination…but the opposite is true.  Grief is simply the journey, the vehicle that leads us to what we already believe about God, his goodness, and the world around us. In grief we don’t just come face to face with the reality of pain but also with the reality of ourselves. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
A lot of times when we face these innermost beliefs, we decide to shape our theology about God and the world out of what has happened to us and our pain. The problem is, the only thing this does is to prolong the grief. It’s basically like letting the grief you feel permeate and dictate all areas of your life, for the rest of your life. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
However, when we let grief do its job and reveal what it needs to like only grief can, it enables us take that hidden innermost belief and shape it to what we know to be true, but now with more love, understanding, and compassion for those around us. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
And when we surrender to the process rather then fighting it, it transforms us as we meet face to face with this simple but powerful truth: As followers of Jesus we have hope in the midst of grief, we have promise in the midst of hopelessness. That one day all things will be redeemed in the most beautiful way and until that time comes everything works for our good. Not that what happens to us is always good, but that even the hardship the sad things are not exempt from the goodness of God permeating them. So even in midst of the deepest pain there is still a promise. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
This essential hope is what allows us to not jump over the grief, or stay in it and camp there. But rather it allows us to surrender to it. To fully feel it, working through it without drowning in it. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
When in the throes of grief, feel what you need to feel, cry, scream, laugh with denial, walk though the dark night of your soul.  But know in the midst of pain even though you can’t see or feel it know that joy always comes in the morning!
