God speaks to me in all kinds of different ways, but lately it has been through nature. There are a few new baby birds in my yard, and one of them is a noisy little Mockingbird. He has just learned to fly. He perches on the fence, throws his head back and opens his mouth as though he is waiting for his mother to come and feed him. She swoops by momentarily and takes off again, but she doesn’t feed him. He is learning to take care of himself now. Adult Mockingbirds sing all different kinds of songs, but this baby only has a high-pitched chirp. He looks like he’s overly confident and confused at the same time. It’s funny to watch.
How We Feed Ourselves Outside of Church
I felt the Holy Spirit teaching me something as I observed this little bird. Since March, the church has been closed due to Coronavirus. This came as a shock to many people. Church is online, and we have all had to stay home. Some of us are just like this bird. We are learning to fly, and to feed ourselves. When Jesus taught the disciples to pray, he said, Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:11 ESV). It also says in Matthew 4:4, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. We cannot expect to only be fed at church. The beautiful reality about this is that The Holy Spirit has been sent to be our teacher! Jesus said the The Holy Spirit would come and be our helper, guiding us into all truth. (John 16:7-15)
Jesus is the bread of life (John 6:35). His word and His Presence are for all of us, not just our pastors. I believe that, even though the church doors are closed for a while, we can thrive and come out of this stronger. It feels like we’ve been kicked out of the nest, but what’s actually true, is that we’ve been given the opportunity to grow as temples of the Holy Spirit. He abides in us, and we with Him. We are the church, and nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39).
Just like this little bird, we will grow and mature, and a new song will arise if we will press in and keep our focus on God. He promises that we will bear good fruit if we abide in Him. Find your food in the word of God, and in the Presence of the Holy Spirit. He longs to teach you, and to show you how He is working all things for your good. You are fully equipped in Him!
