Speak Your Wife’s Love Language
We love because HE first loved us with the deepest kind of sacrificial love that we can never return. This kind of love is so powerful that we have no choice but to try and pour as much of that love as possible out onto the people in our lives, with our spouses always taking first priority.
However, as Bri Lamm shares in an article recently posted on FaithIt, because we were all created uniquely in God’s image, “the ways in which we love others, and feel loved ourselves, are different.”
In his book “The 5 Love Languages,” Gary Chapman writes that there are five different ways that people can receive love: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Through answering the questions in his book you can discover which of these love languages fills your heart up the most.
As Lamm and her husband discovered after taking the assessment, the ways that they felt the most loved were very different from each other.
“We took the test together to identify our own love languages so that we could communicate to each other, exactly what we need in order to fill our love buckets. In knowing what we need individually, we’re also able to recognize how we naturally love the other person,” Lamm wrote. “For example, my love language is words of affirmation. So I naturally build my husband up, and constantly use words to love him, assuming they make him feel loved.”
Though Lamm naturally leans towards showering her spouse with words of affirmation, the fact is that he actually feels the most loved when he is spending quality time with his wife. Which, in turn, is the way that he tends to show his love to Lamm.
So what do you do when each spouse expresses and feels the most loved in different ways from each other? The first step is taking the time to learn what love languages are the strongest for your spouse. This way you can show that you truly care and want to get to know your spouse better.
Once you know how your spouse feels the most loved make sure to be intentional about expressing their love language back to them. If they need quality time then put aside time in your week to give them the attention and focus that they need.
In her article, Lamm points out that it can be hard for some men to express how they feel in words to their spouse. Her suggestion is to find quotes on love that can be shared with your spouse if words of affirmation happens to be their love language.
