An Indian man helps people in need by opening a “Rice ATM” using his entire life and home savings.

Ramu Dosapati

A corporate Human Resource executive, Ramu Dosapati, is being hailed as a hero for his selfless act to help people in need. He used up all his life savings and house savings to create a “Rice ATM,” where people could collect rice anytime they needed it.

In 2020, the heavy flooding in the Hyderabad region of India and the coronavirus pandemic greatly affected the economy. Many migrant workers are stranded without any means of support. Witnessing how people are in desperate need of help, Ramu took the initiative to aid those in need.

Rice ATM

To ensure that the migrant workers won’t go without any food, Ramu has spent nearly $61,000 of his own money to open the “Rice ATM”. It is where people could receive rice and other necessities 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Ramu first had the idea to establish the “Rice ATM” when he noticed a young woman buying $2,500-worth of chicken. Intrigued by why he bought that much chicken, he asked the young woman. It turned out that the woman is a security guard at a camp for migrant workers. She bought all those chicken to give to the camp’s residents that went out of food.

“When I asked her about her salary, she said it was ₹6,000. That made me think that if a lady with ₹6,000 salaries can spend ₹2,000 on the needy, why can’t I do the same?” Ramu said in an interview with Business Insider India.

A selfless act of kindness

Ramu immediately cashed out his retirement fund to help those migrant workers. After discussing with his family, he also used up their savings for their dream house for his charity.

Today, the selfless act of Ramu started a chain of kindness, people are now donating to the initiative. Ramu is a blessing to migrant workers in need.
