I get hundreds of messages all the time from people asking me to pray for them. It usually sounds like, “God isn’t doing this, and I’m not seeing this breakthrough I’m praying for.” Different scenarios, but it’s always the same basic thing – what God is not doing. What He hasn’t saved them from, what He hasn’t paid for, and what door He hasn’t opened for them. How often is our relationship with God based on what He does for us?
This really matters, because He’s a relational God. The Bible says, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well,” (Matthew 6:33 NIV).
When was the last time you actually went and spent time with the Lord just to be with Him? Not
to ask for anything; just to be with Him. It’s not that God doesn’t like to do things for us, but we
don’t want that to be what our relationship is contingent on.
We Like To Take Charge
It’s a lot like playing with Legos. Let’s say you’re a little kid who just got a brand new Lego set. You’re so excited and start playing with your Legos. Your dad comes and he wants to play Legos with you, but you say, “No, I got it. I have an idea of what I want it to look like.”
You’re focused on what you can do on your own. Your dad is focused on spending time with you and doing something together. At the end of the day you get frustrated because it isn’t turning out the way you wanted. You finally let your dad get down on his belly and lay on the floor and build Legos with you. And then you start getting excited, “Oh, we could put this here!” and he points out what you could put there to make it work.
The next thing you know you’ve built this beautiful mansion with your father while having a blast together. That’s what relationship with God is like!
The Fruit Of Relationship
I don’t ever want the things God does—paying off my bills, opening doors for ministry—to be the reason I am going to Him. I spend hours with God every day just because I love to.
If you look at my life on Facebook or Instagram, everyone always wants to talk about the crazy God encounters, miracles, prophetic deliverance, etc. I have in my life, but it’s all a fruit of being on my belly playing Legos with my Daddy and building something together with Him.
When bigger things are coming along and you think, “Jesus, this seems bigger than what I can build.” Tune into His heart and His perspective. What He has for you to build along with Him is just one way He wants to spend time with you.
I feel like we hear this scripture so much it becomes mundane, so I’m going to write it again. Take a moment to read it with fresh eyes: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well,” (Matthew 6:33 NIV).
It’s not cliché at all. It’s true. Yes, God is aware that you need your bills paid. God is aware that you want cancer healed. God is aware that there are things you’re desiring and wanting, but if your love and relationship with Him is contingent on getting those prayers answered, then that’s not a relationship. It’s a transaction.
When you seek His face just because you want to seek His face, then all those things that you’re desiring become a fruit of the relationship you’re in instead of proof that you’re in one.
You’re Not Alone
There are a lot of people struggling right now contending for prayers that haven’t been answered. Sometime, it’s not about praying harder for the prayer request. Sometimes, it’s about setting the need aside and trusting Him that He has it covered.
If you’re looking for clarity on something today, I encourage you to just spend time with Him and allow space for Him to talk back. He will speak to you!
