The health care system is on the verge of collapsing, and the lack of resources and staff are harming its ability to provide proper care, the National Information and Knowledge Center warned Tuesday.
The National Information and Knowledge Center is a body established by the IDF Intelligence Division to assist the Ministry of Health in systemic and medical research on the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).
As an example, the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya stated Tuesday that it has registered a significant increase in the number of Corona patients in its care. The director of the medical center, Prof. Masad Barhoum, instructed the staff to open a fourth corona ward, instead of one of the internal wards. This is the second internal department to be converted to a Corona ward, out of six internal medicine departments.
Barhoum warned that “the combination of corona illness and winter sickness, and especially the Corona’s high rate of infections, is bringing us to the limit of capacity, and we may have to stop elective proceedures.”
Israel is currently experiencing the peak of the Omicron variant wave, with the number of infections setting a new record every day.
In the past week, more than 500,000 Israeli have tested positive for the virus, and a total of over one million Israelis have tested positive since the beginning of the fifth wave, which is 11% of the country’s entire population.
Together with the multiplying cases, some 8,650 medical staff are in quarantine, including 1,225 doctors 2,725 nurses, about 9% of the staff.
The number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in serious condition stands at 845, eight times the number registered two weeks ago.
However, the R coefficient, which indicates the spread of the virus, was registered at a decline in recent days, currently at 1.23, meaning that the virus is still spreading but at a slower rate.
The daily death toll Sunday was 21, 20 times more than two weeks ago. 125 Israelis have died of COVID-19 in the past week, in 83% increase over the week before that, totaling at 8,487 tis the beginning of the pandemic.
