When you think about Jesus at work, what first comes to your mind? There’s no right or wrong answer here, but the Lord has shown me over the years how prayer is key for bringing the focus of Jesus into your life and workplace. When you want to share your faith with others, prayer is one of the main foundational pieces as it is stated in Mark 1:35 “The next morning, Jesus got up long before daylight, left the house while it was dark, and made His way to a secluded place to give Himself to prayer.”
Whether God is calling you to work with students, patients or staff members, it is essential you bring prayer, as Jesus did, into your daily walk with Him.
The second step in seeing Jesus work in your life, no matter what career you have, is to touch others by incorporating worship as part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth. When you think of worship, don’t just let your mind wander to putting your Hillsong album, although I love Hillsong music.
If we look to the Bible, there are over 100 references to worship. In the book of Joshua 6:15-16, we read, “But it came to pass on the seventh day that they rose early, about the dawning of the day, and marched around the city seven times in the same manner. On that day only, they marched around the city seven times. And the seventh time it happened, when the priests blew the trumpets, that Joshua said to the people: ‘Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!’”
You too, can worship in a way that will break down walls, win battles and deter the enemy’s plan to bring VICTORY in every situation!
Worship is meant for God’s glory, His praise and also His honor. Singing to Him is one way, praising God in your mind as you are interacting others, be they co-workers, customers, patients or clients. Then, when you have a moment of quiet you can fall to your knees in prayerful worship or do as David did in 1 Chronicles 29:20, “Then David said to all the assembly, ‘Now bless the Lord your God.’ So all the assembly blessed the Lord God of their fathers, and bowed their heads and prostrated themselves before the Lord and the king.”
Likewise, you can see Jesus at work in your life when you get together with other believers. Hebrews 10:24 states, “Discover creative ways to encourage others and to motivate them toward acts of compassion, doing beautiful works as expressions of love.” When I was employed at a Biotechnology company, I found it lonely on a day-to-day basis. Don’t get me wrong, I prayed on my way to work and worshipped God to lift my spirits, but there was something missing.
Do you know what it was? It was a sister or brother in Christ to pray with and encourage in our place of work serving God. I’d like you to take time today asking God to provide you with someone or a group of people to get together with to pray each morning before your day starts. What I did to help my situation was to get on a phone call with one or two of my sisters in Christ and pray everyday before we started our work. You can also meet with believers for 15 minutes before your day starts. I did this at one of my jobs and it was so motivating for me as I was constantly reminded to be the light in my workplace.
Whichever step you incorporate into your daily life today: Prayer, Worship, and Getting Together with Other Believers, I encourage you to know that Jesus is with you at your workplace and He has you exactly where He wants you serving today. You are an encouragement to those around you because you carry the light of Jesus inside of you.
Keep your faith in God, knowing His promises will be fulfilled according to His Word. As Paul reminds us in Romans 15:4, “Whatever was written beforehand is meant to instruct us in how to live. The Scriptures impart to us encouragement and inspiration so that we can live in hope and endure all things.”
