Let’s not compromise God’s Word
One of Joseph’s first points is “We don’t want to compromise because our standard is the Bible.” He explains how many believers and different denominations doubt the gift of tongues and say it has passed away. But he explains how scripture says otherwise. Joseph mentions Acts 19 where Paul talks to the disciples about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Paul asked the disciples, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Paul asks, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s Baptism, they replied.” Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
It later explains how the disciples were all baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus and when Paul touched them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied! Joseph continues to point out how our standard as Christians is the Bible and this passage is proof of that.
He also shares, “Once you receive Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit is resident in you, but once you get baptized in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit presides over you!”
What are the benefits of speaking in tongues according to Joseph Prince?
Joseph explains the benefits of receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. He explains how God gave this experience to the disciples on Pentecost and says: “Of all the gifts, all the things that God could have given, on the most important day of Pentecost, He gave them the Baptism of the Holy Spirit of speaking in tongues.”
He asks us “Do you think for one minute that God would give them something that would not benefit them, to glorify Christ, to magnify God?” Joseph also mentions how the great revivalist, Smith Wigglesworth, who raised 10 people from the dead, spent every morning praying in tongues! He explained that Smith was a great example of someone who was not educated and yet was used by God by praying in tongues.
Another benefit of praying in tongues that Joseph points out is the ability to pray God’s perfect will. It mentions in 1 Corinthians that when we speak in tongues, we are talking directly to God! We may not be able to understand what we’re praying, but the Spirit prays through us, accomplishing God’s will. This is the key Joseph Prince was talking about to living a Spirit-led life.
“For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.” (1 Corinthians 14:2)
