“BREAKING NEWS: JOYCE MEYER GETS A TATTOO – You can imagine the headlines!” says the popular Bible teacher, if she were to get inked. Watch the video above and hear what Joyce has to say about tattoos. It makes for compelling viewing.
Joyce is the host of Enjoying Everyday Life on GOD TV and for many Christians getting a tattoo may be taking enjoying life too far! However, Joyce is more concerned about all the things you can do as a Christian rather than the things you can’t. For example she says its far better to hang out with other believers and have fun than to sit getting drunk in a pub and have a massive hangover.
Moreover, Joyce urges us to live a life free from legalism. “Serving God is not boring and there’s so many things you can do!” she says. But is getting a tattoo one of them?
Joyce points out a couple of key scriptures that address this question.
“You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:28)
“Some will say, ‘I belong to the Lord’; others will call themselves by the name of Jacob; still others will write on their hand, ‘The Lord’s’.” (Isaiah 44:5)
With regard to the first scripture, could this Biblical prohibition of tattoos be limited to anything related to the dead? Could the second scripture offset any misgivings we have about writing on our bodies? Joyce has some surprising answers.
“it’s all about our motives”
Ultimately getting a tattoo is a question of personal taste, something we shouldn’t judge others for. It seems Joyce may be keen to get a tattoo just to ‘make religious demons mad’!
Joyce may or may not ever get a tattoo but if she does, we can guess what it would be. It most probably wouldn’t be an elegant floral arrangement. More likely she would make be a bold statement with a tattoo that reads: “I belong to the Lord”.
Personally I don’t have a tattoo and wouldn’t get one, but if I did, I may just use the same words from Isaiah 44.5.
As Joyce says, “it’s all about our motives” as to why we do something. So hey why not, Joyce? Let’s get matching tattoos! “That I may by all means save some.” (1 Corinthians 9:22)
