Keep Your Eyes On Jesus

Keep Your Eyes On Jesus
Keep Your Eyes On Jesus

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” – Matthew 14:28-32

As an entrepreneur you are on your own most of the time, especially when starting out. You don’t have a boss. You are your own boss. You call the shots and make the big decisions. If there is a fire you are the one who has to put it out. Depending on what size you grow your company to, and if you hire employees or take on investors, it may remain this way for a while. While on your own it is absolutely critical to your success as an entrepreneur to not rely on yourself, but to trust fully in God.

Let’s use Peter as an example. In the above passage he is in a boat with some of the other disciples and he sees Jesus in the distance walking on the water. Jesus calls to Peter to come to him and Peter gets out of the boat and starts walking on the water also. This takes guts and faith to do! As Peter is walking on the water the wind picks up and he becomes frightened and cries out for Jesus to save him. Peter became frightened and lost sight of what he was actually doing in the first place, walking on the water!

If God has called you to be an entrepreneur then you ought to take particular note of this story. Taking the step to start your business is like getting out of the boat and following Jesus towards your calling. I guarantee that you will face obstacles and challenges of all sorts along the way. If you lose sight of the fact that God has called you to do this, you too will become frightened. As an entrepreneur it is critically important to stay focused on where you are going, not what you are going through. If Peter had stayed focused on Jesus, and not on the storm around him, he would have been able to continue towards his end goal without fear or concern. Sure, the wind and the waves were probably scary looking, but only if they are your focus instead of Jesus.

Obstacles and challenges will come and go every day in your life as an entrepreneur. Jesus will never change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

“Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed…” (Hebrews 12:2 MSG)

Pray this prayer with me:

Father God, help me to look to you at all times in my business and my daily walk with you. Give me the strength to persevere during storms and not be distracted with what’s going on in my circumstances. I choose to put my faith in you and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus. I trust that you will help me every step of the way. Amen
