It can be hard being the brother of a special needs sibling, it can feel like a lot of our life revolves around what is best for his sister, and the truth is it does.
You add that onto two parents who are busy with work and processing through their own junk. It can be a lot for our little guy who is a major feeler.
Jonny and I could tell he has been getting lost in the mix of it all and so we have been trying to intentionally do things to fill up his spirit.
Today we took him on one of our fave hikes and he killed it, at times he wanted to give up but we kept say just keep going, I know it’s hard but it will be so worth it, you are doing a great job!
Our hike today is a lot like life, every step can feel hard and painful, and yet you are surrounded by such beauty and adventure. Eventually this leads you to the Birdseye view of your life where somehow the pain, the adventure, and the beauty all make sense to tell the story of who you have become.
It’s a hard thing to accept that we can’t save our kids from facing pain. In fact I think one of the deepest pains in life is watching your child struggle through pain or any kind of suffering. The challenge is to not victimize or coddle our kids but rather to champion them through on whatever path life has handed them even hard ones.
Compassion & validation pave the way for ownership in ones life, as parents we get the privilege of compassionately leading our kids through the pain knowing that on the other side of whatever they face is the person they were always meant to be, and one day every step even the painful ones will have been so worth it because of who they became through it.
