What is a missionary?
Merriam Webster’s defines a missionary in the following way:
Missionary: a person undertaking a mission and especially a religious mission <missionaries who strove to convert natives to Christianity>
Take a look at Jesus’ command to his disciples, before ascending into heaven.
Mark 16:15 – And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Do you consider yourself a disciple of Christ? If so, you are called to be a missionary. Jesus commissions His disciples to preach the gospel. That’s you and me. This is our responsibility. It’s not a small super special group within the body of Christ. We all need to be a witness.
Now, if you’re questioning whether or not to the leave country, that’s a different story. In Acts 1:8 Jesus tells his followers to start in their home city of Jerusalem, then go to the surrounding region and ultimately to the ends of the Earth.
Are you currently spreading the gospel in your city? What kind of ministry are you involved in? Jesus lays out the blueprint: start proclaiming the good news where He’s planted you today. As the ministry grows, it will become clearer what next steps to take.
While doing ministry in your hometown, investigate the idea of a short-term missions trip. There are several terrific mission organizations and churches sending people out to share the gospel. Do you have a burden for a particular people group? Take an exploratory trip to see what direction the Lord might lead you in.
Consider reading biographies and autobiographies of preachers and missionaries. Talk to some people currently living overseas. Get real feedback regarding the lifestyle decisions and choices this requires.
The other option is to just say, “Yes!” Jesus said, “go” so go. Go until the Lord completely stops you. He did for the Apostle Paul, He would do the same for you because He’s no respecter of persons.
Acts 16:6-7 – “Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.”
Jesus instructed us to pray for laborers to be thrusted forth into the harvest.
Matthew 9:37-38 – Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
Who knows? Maybe this message i part of God’s process to answer your prayers over the idea of becoming a missionary? Will you be the answer to the Church’s prayer to send forth laborers? Will you be the answered prayer to those who have never heard the name of Jesus?
May the Lord continue to faithfully lead you and guide you in the direction He has for your life. He is with you.
