At least 93 were killed due to a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that hit western China, and thousands of residents were greatly affected.
Magnitude 6.7 earthquake
On September 5, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Sichuan province in western China. Much of the damages are centered in the Ganze Tibetan Autonomous Region. As of today, 93 people have been reported to have died due to the fatal earthquake.
The rescue attempt has been challenging due to the heavy rainfall. At least 11,000 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters because of the risk of landslides in some areas. Rescuers are experiencing difficulties in their search and rescue operations. As of Sunday evening, at least 25 people were reported missing.

Western China
On September 12, mourning ceremonies were held in Luding and Shimian County for the victims of the earthquake. It is believed to be the strongest earthquake to hit Sichuan province since 2017.
In Luding, telecommunications, water, and power infrastructure were severely damaged. Hundreds of houses had collapsed and over 13,000 houses were damaged. Several hotels and tourist spots were also affected by the earthquake.
The Sichuan area, especially the mountainous regions commonly experiences earthquakes due to the tectonically active area in the eastern boundary of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. China’s deadliest earthquake happened in 2008 when a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Shichuan’s Wenchuan county. Almost 70,000 people lost their lives in that earthquake.
Friends, let us pray for those who have been affected by the recent earthquake in China. Let us pray for comfort and peace for those who lost their loved ones. And let us pray that those who have been affected may recover from the damages.
