A pastor’s wife became an alcoholic when her childhood traumas resurfaced. But she found freedom after an encounter with God.
Perfect Life Outside But Dying Inside
Irene Rollins looked like she was living a perfect life on the outside. She was a pastor’s wife, and both and she and her husband were pastoring a growing church. They had a house, three children, and even a dog. But inside, Irene was slowly dying.
“I was completely just falling apart and unraveling. I had sort of a mid-life crisis in my 30s ,” Irene recalled.
Apparently, all of Irene’s undealt with pain and trauma in the past began to resurface in her life. But she responded to it by numbing her pain. And the only way she could numb it was through drinking alcohol. At first, she thought she was simply drinking wine to relieve her stress. But soon, her alcohol dependence began to grow more and more.
Family Suffers From Alcoholic Wife & Mom
Irene denied that she became addicted to alcohol until her family began to suffer. She kept putting on a mask while serving at church. But all the while at home, she began to have frequent arguments with her husband because of how much she would drink.
Soon, Irene distanced herself from her husband and continued drinking alcohol secretly. Her children also began to feel the gap between them and their mom.

Then one day, as Irene’s addiction grew worse, a close circle of friends and family intervened. Her husband then took her to a rehab center that specialized in treating addiction through the lenses of trauma. Hence, Irene spent the next 40 days inside the rehab center.
Irene began to face her childhood traumas inside the rehab—sexual abuse, verbal and physical abuse from men. That’s when her healing started to manifest.
Finally, on day 38 in rehab, Irene encountered God and that totally healed her.
