Christian leaders are calling Christians to pray for Brett Kavanaugh and his family following his nomination to the US Supreme Court by President Trump. Though Judge Kavanaugh is widely respected throughout the USA, he still has to weather what may be a difficult confirmation process, given the current political division in the USA and those protesting his appointment because they see him as being too conservative.
After much speculation, Brett Kavanaugh was nominated by President Trump at the White House on Monday, July 9th. He is a United States Circuit Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and has been nominated to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81, who will retire soon. This is President Trump’s second Supreme Court appointment since he took office and represents a far-reaching opportunity to affect future generations.
Kavanaugh is no stranger to the White House, having served as Staff Secretary for George W Bush and has taught at both Harvard and Yale Law Schools. He appears to have all the right qualifications but still has a long way to go before he gets his confirmation vote in the Senate which requires a 51-vote majority. Political opponents of the Trump Administration are against him as they fear his stance on many issues including abortion and gay rights. However, Kavanaugh has promised to keep an open mind.
“I believe that an independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our constitutional republic,” he said. “If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case, and I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and of the American rule of law.”
Shortly after the announcement Dr Ronnie Floyd, who is President of the National Day of Prayer issued this statement:
“Perhaps at no other time in history has the integrity of our Supreme Court mattered more. Through their decisions and rulings, our justices are sharing the future of human dignity, the definition of family and marriage and the personal assurance of religious freedom in America for years to come. That is why I am delighted to hear President Trump has yet again nominated to the court another justice committed to following the original intent of our constitution.
“Along with millions of Christians across our nation, I join in praying for Judge Brett Kavanaugh as he undergoes the confirmation process and faces the challenges set before him. Our ultimate prayer is that we will all remember that America doesn’t need to be redefined – it needs to be rediscovered.”
Evangelist Franklin Graham was quick to congratulate Judge Kavanaugh on his nomination. “President Trump has kept his word—again. He promised the American people that if he had the opportunity, he’d nominate conservative justices to the US Supreme Court and he’s done just that.
“The socialist left are of course already enraged. Another conservative justice threatens their agendas and the direction they were trying to push this country. They are rallying their forces and had begun protesting even before the announcement was made!
“Thank God for this long-awaited opportunity to change the makeup of the US Supreme Court. We need to be faithful to pray for Judge Kavanaugh and his family during this very intense confirmation process.”
US Readers, Sign the Petition to Confirm Brett Kavanaugh
Jay Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) is calling Christians throughout the USA to pray and also to take action by signing a petition to quickly confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
“Judge Kavanaugh is an immensely qualified conservative who has a proven record of unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the Constitution,” Sekulow says. “But the Left has begun a scorched-earth campaign to defeat him, They don’t want a consistent conservative on the Court and will stop at nothing. We’re mobilizing on Capitol Hill, demanding Judge Kavanaugh’s quick confirmation. Take action with us today!”
