#PrayForLebanon and #PrayForBeirut are trending following the horrific explosion in Beirut. It left the city in ruins, wounded thousands, and killed at least 100.

Explosion in Beirut

On August 4 at around 6:00 PM local time, an explosion happened at a warehouse at the Port of Beirut. The explosion sent a cloud of smoke above the scene as firefighters rushed to extinguish the fire. About eight minutes after the first explosion, a second massive explosion happened.

“Firefighters came to fight the fire, and then they vanished,” Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said in tears in an interview with the media. “We don’t know where they are. This reminds me of what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I have never seen destruction on this scale in my life.”

The capital city of Lebanon

The second horrific explosion sent a reddish fireball into the air and a tornado-like shockwave across the city. It flattened the port where the explosion took place and shattered windows across the city. It also destroyed buildings within central Beirut.

The explosion in the capital city of Lebanon has resulted in up to $5 billion worth of damage according to Gov. Abboud. Homes of thousands of families were destroyed by the blast.

At least 135 people were killed from the explosion and over 5,000 people were reported to be wounded. As rescue operations by the Lebanon authorities continue, numbers were expected to still rise.

#PrayForLebanon

Meanwhile, people across the world are praying for those who were affected by the explosion. On Social media, #PrayForLebanon and #PrayForBeirut trended. The Giza pyramids in Egypt and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai lit up with the flag of Lebanon in solidarity with the victims.

The enemy has destroyed Lebanon, and it is the Lord who can restore the nation. Let us pray for comfort and healing for our brothers and sisters in Lebanon. As the hit song “The Blessing,” declares, may the face of the Lord shine upon Lebanon.

Watch the Arabic version of Elevation Worship’s “The Blessing” below. It is probably the most timely song for Beirut during this moment.
