We have the power to choose our focus. In times of turmoil it is even more imperative that we meditate on God’s Word.
Psalm 91 is an “if-then” proposition from God to us. We have a part to play in our relationship with Him. God is the initiator. It is our choice to spend time with Him. This wise decision is the lynch pin to Him protecting us.
Though we make God our refuge, trials will come. In John 16:33 Jesus said “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” God promises He will be with us in difficult times and He will bring us to victory through them in this process that builds our faith.
The Hebrew Language
The Hebrew language is rich! Here is a summary of verses 1 and 2 of Psalm 91. I used the Amplified Bible and the Strong’s Concordance.
Verse 1 says “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty.”
“Dwell” means to sit down in quiet; to remain, settle, or to marry; to unite with God in permanent relationship.
“Secret” denotes cover or hidden, a location of protection. “Place” signifies a sacred space, a holy sanctuary.
“Most High” is El Elyon Who is supreme and positioned far above all things.
In the concordance the word “abide” is used in place of “stable and fixed” but it means just that. It also means to find rest.
God’s “Shadow” indicates His shade or a place of defense under Him.
The meaning of “the Almighty” is El Shaddai, the God of bountiful grace, power and supply.
Verse 2 reads “I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I trust!”
When we “say” we are to speak, declare, publish, utter or answer.
God is our “Refuge” so we may run to Him as our protection.
A “Fortress” may refer to a net, being captured, a stronghold, strong place, fort or place of defense.
Choosing Our Focus
We who are settled in and married to God are in a protected sacred space with the One true and only uncreated Being. He is supreme, high and lifted up above all things. Let’s rest, fix and keep our focus on God. We stay stable amidst trying circumstances. We are defended, healed, delivered and comforted under His shade. He is the God of inexhaustible bountiful grace, full of majestic strength and limitless power, ability and provision. We declare out loud that He is our protector, our shelter and our safe haven.
Choose to spend time with God every day. Praise Him out loud. Watch for His response.
