Rick Pino is a prominent worship singer and songwriter. In his recent post, he warns Christians today about the danger of growing up in the church. He said that although there are many benefits of being raised inside the community, there is a pitfall that Christians should look out for.

The “You’re An Army” singer confessed that he grew up with his family “dragging” him to church. He enumerated many benefits of getting involved with the church: community, corporate worship, outreach, commitment, service, and discipleship.
“What’s the danger, you ask?” he wrote. The real danger is losing our sense of wonder in God.

“Many times when we are in close proximity to God in the context of church culture, we can lose our sense of wonder.”
Sense of wonder
“When we lose our wonder, magnificent scriptures (like John 3:16), or concepts (like, “worthy is the Lamb”) become very “normal’ and even ‘boring,'” he explained. “Because we hear them so often.”
He continued, “Remember, the Israelites didn’t perish because for lack of wonders. They perished for lack of wonder. It’s not that there was a shortage of miracles. It’s that they couldn’t see God in the everyday manna.”
The founder of the Heart of David Movement then referred to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 18:3. It says, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Rick said that childlike wonder gives us the ability to discover God in new ways, especially in the normal, everyday things. “It allows us to see the ‘common, everyday’ things as miraculous, which opens up the door to faith,” he said.
When we don’t put our perspective into this lens, we are more prone to be cynical. “[We] eventually view even the greatest miracles with a ‘no big deal attitude,’ opening up the door to unbelief.”
He concluded his message with a challenge to get back to the wonder and beauty of God and realize who we worship today. “Never lose your wonder,” he exhorted.
