I got saved a few months after I graduated from college. I started going to a campus ministry and one of the girls there told me to “read my Bible”. I listened and began pouring through all the stories of Jesus’ life and ministry. Why hadn’t someone introduced me about Him before?! As I read, I began to discover the love and acceptance and so many other amazing things that were made available through knowing Jesus Christ. Thus, I know first hand why sharing the Gospel is so important.
Checking the Box
In John 6:44 Jesus says, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them” and looking back the Father had been drawing me for years!. They say hindsight is 20/20 and it definitely is!
I first encountered Jesus, but didn’t know it, while I was watching the sunrise over the mountains at summer camp when I was 14. After that I joined a Christian club called Students With A Testimony. We’d meet once a week during lunch and someone would share a short lesson and then came prayer requests. Prayer requests were so weird to me because most people would say “unspoken” and I never understood how we could actually pray for them if we never knew what to pray?!
During my junior or senior year I went to an event at one of the SWAT leader’s church. At the end they asked people to come down (I don’t remember why) and they prayed for me (I don’t remember what) and sent me on my way. My parents also had me take a confirmation class and I had to pass a test about all the “Jesus stuff” to get confirmed…whatever that meant?!
By the time I actually met Jesus – in my room, by myself, while reading the book Jesus Freak by DC Talk – there were probably 3 or 4 organizations that had shared the Gospel with me and checked me off as saved…but I wasn’t!
Sharing the Gospel Is Simple
I get really passionate about equipping believers to effectively share the Gospel. I don’t blame people for it taking years for me to meet Jesus, but what impact would have knowing Jesus sooner had on my life? I don’t dwell there, it’s a mute point. However, I want to encourage you that sharing the Gospel is simpler than we often make it to be.
I was being told about Jesus, but I wasn’t being introduced to Him. As believers, we actually need to spend time getting to know Jesus in order to effectively introduce Him to others. That means spending time in the Word of God, talking to Him and having conversations too…we call that prayer. We can’t just know about Jesus, we must know Him personally and intimately, and that we simply do that by spending time with Him.
Once we begin to know Jesus, sharing the Gospel becomes super simple. All we have to do is introduce the person to our friend, Jesus. How do you do that? You dod that the same exact way you would introduce any friend to another friend. You share how you met, experiences you’ve had with them, and memories you’ve made.
Let’s Get Practical
Sharing the Gospel is simply introducing others to your friend, Jesus. What does that look like? Share the story about how you first met Jesus. Tell someone about a verse that really spoke to you or helped you through a situation. Sharing stories about your relationship with Jesus is what it’s all about!
Don’t just tell people about Jesus. It’s much more effective to share the story of how you met Jesus and how coming into relationship with Him impacted your life as opposed to giving information about Him. Both are true, but sharing stories invites the listener into relationship with Him.
Sharing the Gospel is simple, just go share your stories!
