Are Christians free to watch any kind of entertainment? Is that part of our freedom in Jesus?
Dr. Michael Brown
Today’s question on Ask Me Anything with biblical scholar Dr. Michael Brown is all about entertainment. Is it a sin to watch any entertainment or are we free to watch any kind of movie?
If the question is about your free will as a person, yes you are free to watch anything you like. However, the real question is, is it a sin to watch it? According to Dr. Brown, if you are being entertained by sinful genres, then yes it is a sin to watch that kind of entertainment.
“Of course, it’s a sin to watch sinful entertainment,” Dr. Michael said. “Jesus sets us free from sin not to sin.”
“Jesus says if your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out, throw it away,” he explained. “He’s speaking metaphorically, it’s a figure of speech to say if the things you’re watching are causing you to sin, get rid of them. Absolutely without question, we are called to be holy as God is holy.”
Dr. Brown emphasizes that it is okay to have relaxation with your family over some family-friendly movies but we should be wise in choosing what kind of entertainment we are watching. As a follower of Christ, we have been given the wisdom to discern light and darkness. Let us keep ourselves pure by avoiding sinful entertainment that leads us to sin.
“Ask the question is it light or is it darkness? Some things are really neutral but many things are clearly dark and other things are clearly light, let that be your guide.”
