At the young age of six, Wyatt Shield authored a children’s book to inspire kids who are different. His story is originally taken from his own experience, as he was born with 12 fingers.
Wyatt’s Adventures
“Wyatt’s Big Adventures with Shriners” talks about his experience of being different and his adventures with it. He hopes “to help others know that it is okay to be different” and that “little kids can do big things!”
Wyatt’s mom, Amanda, recalled the day the determined boy was born. “I asked my husband, ’10 fingers and ten toes? ‘Without missing a beat, he said, ‘Yup.’ And it wasn’t until we got back to recovery [that] he said,’ So, he has extra fingers.'”
Doctors diagnosed Wyatt with polydactyly, a condition in which a baby is born with one or more fingers. And in the young boy’s case, he had an extra finger on each hand.
Amanda and her husband thanked God for a healthy baby boy despite the case. “We just say God made him special,” Amanda said.
Born with 12 fingers
As years went on, doctors advised surgically removing the extra thumbs because it would hinder Wyatt’s daily tasks and writing. So, the parents decided to have the surgery at Shriner’s Children’s St. Louis in Missouri.
Today, Wyatt is now a first grader who can write and play. Moreover, he is now a writer.
The book’s idea came up during his bath time with his mom. And now, he has sold over 500 books.
When asked about how he feels now that he is an author, Wyatt replies, “One, it was very hard. And second of all, I feel epic!”
Wyatt and his family pray that everyone who will read the book will receive an understanding of how God created each one with unique qualities. “God makes all His people special in their own unique and awesome way,” the book reads. “God made me different, and that is just awesome. I also can’t wait to blossom.”
