Hearing the voice of God can feel frustrating at times. However, once you learn the different ways God speaks to you spending time with God can become much more fruitful.
Here are three different ways that God can speak to you. These are just three of the most common ways He speaks, but there are so many, many more. Remember the time God spoke to Balaam through a donkey (Numbers 22)!
#1 – God Speaks Through His Word
Hebrews 4:12 teaches that the Word of God is “living and active.” That means that the Word of God isn’t just a thick book of information about some stories that happened long ago. It means that the Word of God is alive! It is living and it is breathing and God is speaking to you and I through its pages!
God can speak through one word, like the time I read the word “Father” and as I did, was flooded by His presence. He can speak through a story or parable about sowing seed and reveal a truth about stewarding finances. There is no limit to how God can and wants to speak to you through His Word.
#2 – Through His Spirit
Before Jesus left the earth He told His followers to wait for the Helper to come (Acts 1 & 2). The Holy Spirit is our Counselor (Isaiah 9:6) and He leads us into all truth (John 16:13).
The Holy Spirit also lives inside of us. Isn’t that a crazy thought?! Instead of God’s housing HIs presence inside a tent or temple, like in the Old Testament, He has chosen to live inside of you and I. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead and is with us every day, all day to lead and guide us in living godly lives. In order to do that He speaks to us. That’s right! The Holy Spirit wants to and is speaking to you!
#3 – Through others
God can also speak through others. In the Old Testament He spoke through people like Moses, Joshua, and Daniel. Today, you and I have access to the written Word of God and can listen to message that preachers, teachers, and pastors share from their study of it.
Has a sermon or podcast spoken to you or helped you in life? That’s God speaking through another person directly to you! He can also speak through worship songs, testimonies, and others sharing the lessons they’ve learned in their relationship with God.
