A Syrian pastor chose to stay in war-torn Syria to show people support and what Jesus’ love is during difficult times.
Pastor George Moushi
Pastor George Moushi of the Alliance Church in Qamishli chose to stay when civil war broke out in Syria. Despite the bombings that hit his hometown, he did not flee for the sake of the people. He stayed because he wanted to make God’s love evident by helping people in his community. Around one million Christians have fled Syria since the crisis started.
“People were killed, injured, houses and shops were destroyed,” Pastor George said. “When the Turkish entered Syria, there was a lot of fear. At that time, many families were afraid to send their children to school.”
War-torn Syria
As bombs were being dropped in Qamishli, the pastor has sometimes questioned whether his decision to stay was right or not. Together with his church, they prayed for God’s wisdom.
“We prayed and after that, they were invited to say what they wanted, about sixty percent wanted to stay”
Some of the congregation decided to leave, but Pastor George made sure that they can flee safely and that they had food to consume. He even reached out to churches in other cities to ask for help. While 60% of his church’s population decided to stay with Pastor George.
“I wanted to support both groups, those who stayed, and those who left. But for me, I didn’t want to leave if there still was a member of the church in Qamishli.”
“God didn’t leave us.”
Despite their situation, pastor George has seen God’s hand as more people have come to Christ.
“God didn’t leave us,” Pastor George said. “A lot of people accepted Christ and were added to the church. Although the war was so awful, God turned ashes into beauty, a lot of people came to Christ.”
The Alliance Church will continue to offer support and show Jesus’ love to the war-stricken nation.
“Our church saw that now was a time to stand by the people, support them, and show Jesus’ love in difficult times. The need is not just material. Many people are weary and afraid, so I prayed with them.”
