Steven Curtis Chapman Became First Contemporary Christian Artist To Earn 50th No.1 Song

Award-winning artist, Steven Curtis Chapman has become the very first contemporary Christian artist to have 50 songs at the top of the chart.

Chapman made history after his single “Don’t Lose Heart” became his 50th single to make it to the top of the contemporary Christian genre chart. In a statement, he expressed his awe and disbelief at this milestone in his career. He also expressed his gratitude to those who made this success possible.

“I’m completely blown away by the support for this song and for my music, even after so many years,” Steven said in a statement. “To ever have a number one song on the radio as an artist/songwriter is a dream come true, and to have fifty is simply unbelievable! This only happens because of an amazing team and a community of friends around me who have believed in the unbelievable. I’m grateful and humbled beyond words.”

“Don’t Lose Heart”

His first hit single was the song “His Eyes” in 1988. Other songs included in his chart-topping singles were “Live Out Loud,” “I Will Be Here,” “For The Sake of the Call,” “Dive” and “The Great Adventure.” “Don’t Lose Heart” was released last year as a part of his “Still” album.

The song talks about the grieving his family experienced when they lost their young daughter Maria. In 2008, their 5-year-old daughter was killed in a vehicular accident in their driveway.

“Living between heaven and the real world. That’s kind of where I feel like I am right now, longing for heaven more than ever now. Because I believe that’s where my daughter is,” he said in an interview in 2017. “Between Heaven and the Real World: My Story.”

Whenever we’re faced with a difficult and dark circumstance, never lose hope. Always remember the promises that God gave to you. No matter how hard life gets, you have the heavenly Father who never leaves you nor forsakes you. Life up your eyes to Him and let Him carry you in His arms.

Permission To Be Still

Did you know that being still is a weapon in the Kingdom of God? You have permission to be still. In all of your needs, in all of your desires, in everything that’s going on in your schedule, you can be still.

I actually just came from a prayer meeting and we just laid on the floor and soaked in the presence of God, because soaking and just being still means that we’re surrendered and we trust that our Father is going to take care of us. Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before Him and wait patiently for Him. Fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices.” And Psalm 131 says, “I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me, but I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother. Like a weaned child is my soul within me.”

So just remembering that it is well. It’s well with your soul. It’s well, because Jesus has paid the price and He’s already won the victory. So sometimes we just need to sit back and wait and be silent, and let our spirit commune with God by being still. It is hard to be still in this culture. We are so prone to go, go, go and finish all these tasks and then when we get into our beds at night, we’re exhausted.

But God is calling us, sometimes there’s times where we just need to be still. Sometimes we need to war and fight, and pray that way. So just lean on Him and trust that He’s going to look after the things that you are thinking about. He’s going to look after your family. He’s going to look after your finances. He’s going to look after all of these things because going, going, going can actually cause us to be anxious. It can cause us to get sick. But God knows and He has the answer already.

So, God, I just thank you that we can be still in your presence. God let your presence flood everyone who’s watching right now. God, I pray that your presence would be the thing that we go after, Lord, that we would just rest in your peace. Jesus, one of your names is the Prince of Peace and Holy Spirit, you are our Helper and our Comforter. And so I just pray for your presence to come over everyone who’s watching right now, and that there would be stillness over their souls. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Living An Enriched Life

I often say, “If our output exceeds our input, then our upkeep will be our downfall.” And I think many of us have got so many irons in the fire, we’ve actually put the fire out. And what we need to do is to remove some of those irons out of the fire and stoke up the fire.

Too many of us frequently, often say, “I’ve got too much to do. I haven’t got the time.” But we only have enough time to do the will of God. We don’t have more time. We don’t have less time. So if we keep on saying we don’t have enough time, it has to be because of one of two reasons. One, we are doing things that are not the will of God, or they are the will of God, but someone else should be doing them. And I think if we got this balance in our lives, then I think that will enrich us in building on the basics that Kelly just spoke about. And on those foundations. You know, “Be still and know that I am God.” You know, don’t fret, don’t be anxious, don’t be driven. Be led by the Holy Spirit.

Be Still And Know

“Be still and know that I am God.” That is so much easier said than done, but it’s doable; to just be still and know that He is God. No matter what you’re going through, be still and know. I remember when the Lord was training me in this, and I’d get a pen and a paper, and I would just sit on the floor. And that was my way of being still. And I would just be still before Him, and just listen to what He would say to me. And He would just start to talk to me, and line out some things for me, show me some things that I needed to change. Show me the things that He was so proud of me, or the things that I accomplished. And just being still and knowing that God really does have everything under control.

As you trust Him, He will start to show you how He controls, how He speaks, and then you’ll start to speak what He speaks. You’ll start to do what He does. And then it’ll cause a knowing, like you have to be still first, let Him speak, and then you’ll know that He is God.

Lord, I thank you for those that are busy and they’re not able to just settle themselves before you. I thank you Father, that they would be able to just be still to hear you speak, and to know that you are God, not in just one or two areas of their lives, but in every area of their lives, that you’ve taken care of it. Know that. Know that this morning, and receive that, and rest in it, in Jesus’ Name.

Find The Still Waters

Tired. That word alone is a word we ALL can relate to. At one time or another (or every day), we are tired.

WHEN TOO MUCH IS TOO MUCH

The definition of tired is weary, exhausted, fatigued – being weary suggests a physical or mental condition in which our energy is just plain gone. That is the tiredness I want to talk about.
Psalms talks a lot about David’s weariness. I am so glad he shared that – because the past couple years, I have been weary. I have felt so tired that I felt almost dysfunctional. And NOT so much physical as much as mental.

Psalm 119:28 says, “My soul is weary with sorrow…” AH. Well, there is ONE reason for mental exhaustion. Sorrow. Sorrow drains you right down to the pit of your soul. Has sorrow ever left you feeling too tired to even talk. Or to dream. Or to plan. Or to wonder. Or to hope. Or to just live your life in general. It is that feeling of when too much is just, too much. You are done. You are like that over cooked thanksgiving turkey that was left in the oven too long, with nothing to offer at the thanksgiving table. Over cooked. Over done. Overwhelmed. Just at the end. In a 21st century cultural phrase – you “got nothin’”.

FIND THE STILL WATERS

Rather than dwelling any further on the exhaustion of our soul, let’s instead find out what exactly fixes this! Please David of the Psalms – tell us how you got past your weary soul.

Ah, the MOST familiar Psalm most everyone recognizes or knows, is Psalms 23. THERE lies the answer in all its simplicity and complexity. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” The words that stand out to me personally are – He leads me beside still waters – and, He refreshes my soul.

What does this look like to me? Still waters are just that – they are still. They are NOT moving or consumed with motion. Sometimes I just need that so bad – just to feel the stillness and the peace of that stillness. I ONLY find it in Jesus. I have searched other places and to no avail. It is because Jesus offers a peace the world can NOT give, but also can NOT take away.

It is the time spent in His presence that brings the peace and stillness we all long for! THAT is where the healing waters flow into our exhausted being. THAT is where we find rest in the midst of chaos. THAT is where we find our safest place and holiest retreat. For me, I call it my soul’s treehouse. As I spend time with Him, He refreshes me with that infilling of peace and stillness – the breath comes back into my soul, the lights come back on, the sun rises, the birds start singing – HE RESTORES MY SOUL.

BE STILL AND KNOW

Psalm 46:10 tells us what is OUR part in this – “Be still and KNOW that I am God.” Be still means to cease striving. Just stop. Just be. You’re too weary to do anything anyways, so just fall into the arms of Jesus. Like a freefall into a safe place that only bids you come. He says, “I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” (Jeremiah 31:25)

It seems hard to stop when you are in full motion of this life journey – maybe the weary is kind of a sign from our soul, just letting us know we need to “ stop and sit a spell. “But those who hope in the Lord will RENEW their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and NOT GROW WEARY; they will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) We will grow weary because we are human, but we CAN get through to the other side as we find our strength in God.

After the weariness passes (because it WILL) we will find ourselves stronger than ever IF we allowed God to be our rest and our safe place to recover. We WILL soar like eagles.

The Season Of Snow

One thing I know for sure, God will always speak something deep through something very simple, which is generally nature. “Be still, and know – that I am God.“ (Psalm 46:10) Nature is God’s great canvas on which He paints His masterpieces for us to view, in order that we can find effortless understanding and clear revelation for our complicated life journey.

FIRST SNOW OF THE SEASON

So today it snowed. The first snow of the season, which to me feels like that feeling you get on Christmas morning. So let’s just call it a Christmas Snow. You have heard the expression – “a blanket of snow”. Yes. “He gives snow like wool…” (Psalm 147:16) That is an exact visual of it – it is like a white wool blanket lovingly draped over a barren landscape.

My friend Shaunna is visiting me here on the snowy East Coast (which I refer to as the land of Narnia/blanketed in still shots of black and white), and having come from the sunny West Coast (which I refer to as the land of Oz/blanketed in still shots of vibrant colors). Needless to say, snow was a SHOCK to her, but in a wonderful, childlike way. She really was like a wide eyed kid on Christmas morning, with all the wonder and joy of finding some unexpected treasure upon awakening from her sleep. She excitedly started outside barefoot with her camera to take pictures, then ran back in for shoes – just so gleeful. After she took pictures, she came back in and exclaimed, “Wow. Snow is so quiet; like you can’t hear it snowing!” So simple. I had never thought about the silence of the snow falling. Then she said, “You don’t hear the sounds of snow crunching unless you walk in it so therefore it is meant to be walked in.” So simple. I had never thought about that either. Snow is silent until you walk in it. Then she said how amazing it is to literally see the seasons silently change before her eyes. Whoa. From there the random snow thoughts sparked conversations about God and the seasons of our life.

SEASONS OF LIFE

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens… He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11) Our God is a God of seasons, both in nature and in our lives. He does everything well and on time, and flawlessly – even we could say effortlessly. He speaks, and it is so. If He can do that in nature which we can see happen before our eyes every single day that we live, this should give us peace and assurance that we can fully trust Him with the changing seasons of our lives.

Isaiah 55:10-11 says:“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth, And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”

God uses weather patterns and seasons to replenish the earth, continuously causing it to grow – it is like a constant state of rebirth.

TREASURY OF SNOW

When Job questioned God about His ways, He reminded Job of all the great things He can do that we as humans can NOT do.“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail, which I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle?” (Job 38:22-23) In other Bible translations storehouses can also be called treasuries or armories because the snow is stored/hidden in the clouds, until God speaks – the snow and hail obey His command and wait till He says GO. So the question to Job was, do YOU know how to make it snow, and can YOU cause the hail to fall from the sky? And of course Job’s answer was no. Point being that God was trying to get Job to realize he could trust in the One mightier than he, to cover and protect and guard him in his current sufferings. Just like when it is the exact right time God calls upon the snow to fall, and at the right time it will then warm the earth, so will God work all things for OUR good, at just the right time – we just need to trust Him – and wait. (And how ironic that cold snow warms the earth.)

Oh, and after that initial snowfall my friend experienced for the first time, it hailed. Of course it did. Like literally little balls of snow – we called them snowballs from heaven. That is how God is – He loves to send His children heavenly prizes. Another first for her to see hail. To say that God spoke to her that day, would be 100% accurate. He was reminding her that seasons change, and it is out of OUR control, but totally in HIS control. THIS is why He advises us to just be still and remember the WHO of who He is. He is God.

THE GOD WE CAN TRUST

“I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” (Isaiah 46:4) The same God who keeps nature and the natural seasons with all care and diligence, is the same God who cares for us. Again, “Be still – and know that I am God.”

When it is time, God speaks new life into our dead or barren parts. When it is time, He silently breathes in hope and purpose, where there was none. Psalm 51:7 says, “Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” When it is time, He sends forth His word, and heals us. When it is time, a season in our life will change and the past will be left behind, as if buried under a warm blanket of snow. Oh and one more fun fact – every single snowflake is unique and has its own personal stamp from its Creator. Hmmmm, just like us.

Let it snow, let it snow…it can all change in ONE day. I think God was making a point…

Come On In & Sit Awhile

Tired. That word alone is a word we ALL can relate to. At one time or another (or every day), we are tired. The definition of tired is weary, exhausted, fatigued – being weary suggests a physical or mental condition in which our energy is just plain gone. That is the tired I want to talk about, the kind that requires is to sit awhile.

Psalms talks a lot about David’s weariness. I am so glad he opened his heart and shared that – in all its vulnerability and raw honesty – because the past couple of years, I have been weary. I have felt so tired that I felt almost dysfunctional. And NOT so much physically as much as mentally.

Sorrow

Turbulent Waters Can Be Crossed By Faith

Introduction on Turbulent Waters:

In 1969, Reggae singer Jimmy Cliff recorded a song titled, ‘Many Rivers To Cross’. Jimmy Cliff mentioned that the song was birthed out of the frustration and helplessness he felt after moving from Jamaica to the UK. The feelings came about because unlike what he had expected, nothing significant seemed to be happening in his career at that time.

The lyrics go like this:

Many rivers to cross
But I can’t seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover

Are you feeling like that today? Surrounded by turbulent waters that you can’t seem to cross? It is a fact that many people are facing turbulent waters today, especially with the ripple effects of COVID-19. In the midst of such challenges, the Word of God gives us great hope and assurance. In fact, the Bible encourages us to trust Him completely as we face the turbulent waters of life.

Here are 3 thoughts from the Bible that encourage us to have hope when surrounded by turbulent waters.

1. Turbulent waters cannot drown us

In Isaiah 43:2, the Lord gives great assurance about His protection on His children as they face deep, turbulent waters. He says, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” (Isaiah 43:2) What a great encouragement it is to know that He will not let us drown or be swept away when confronted by what the scripture calls ‘rivers of difficulty’ (Refer Isaiah 43:2 NLT).

The Founder Pastor of People’s Church in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Dr. Colton Wickramaratne was once confronted by some hostile villagers at a swirling river. They threatened to throw him into the river unless he agreed to stop preaching the message of Jesus. Pastor Colton firmly stood for his faith, however, and for a moment it looked like the threat would be carried out. At that critical moment, the Lord intervened and although the villagers harassed him, the deadly threat was not carried out.

2. Jesus speaks to turbulent waters

In Mark 4:35-41, the disciples of Jesus probably faced the worst storm they had ever encountered. Calling on all their experience as seamen, they were desperately looking for an escape route. But escape seemed out of their grasp as “the waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped.” (Mark 4:37) It was then that they remembered that Jesus was in the boat, and they cried out to Him for help. What was Jesus’ response? He simply spoke to the boisterous winds and waves and the storm subsided immediately (Mark 4:39).

Similarly, Jesus is waiting to speak into your storm today. His words of authority and power will calm your storm and bring you safely to the shore. No matter how tough your situation may be, the Bible tells us, “Nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)

My older brother once faced a huge storm in his workplace to which there seemed no human help possible. However, as he sought the Lord in prayer for a breakthrough, Jesus spoke into his situation. As he followed through on what the Lord revealed, the huge challenge was solved in a miraculous way! Yes, Jesus still speaks to turbulent waters.

3. Turbulent waters are pushed back by faith

In Joshua chapter 3, the people of Israel were about to cross the Jordan River to enter the promised land. It was the big moment they had been waiting for with much expectancy. However, Joshua 3:15 tells us that the river was at flood stage at that time. This would have probably meant that attempting to cross over would be like entering into a potentially deadly death-trap.

Joshua and his leaders, including the priests, however, took a step of great faith. As the priests carrying the ark stepped into the Jordan, “the water from upstream stopped flowing.” (Joshua 3:16) As a result, a dry path was opened up for the Israelites to cross over safely to the other side (Joshua 3:17). Similarly, we can push back the turbulent waters the evil one brings against us through steps of faith. As we step into the water by faith, the Lord will open a path for us to find victory.

Closing:

So my friend, if you are facing turbulent waters right now, hold on to the promises of God and stand firm in your faith. As you do so, Jesus will speak to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” (Mark 4:39)

The Sparrow Knows!

Matthew 10:29-30 says, “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” Since I was a child, I have felt a kinship to the tiny bird named Sparrow. Today I was reminded why.

Sparrows are tiny birds that can squeeze themselves into tight spaces all at the same time being able to fly high above the tallest of trees. Their smallness in size and frailty in the body does NOT stop them from being THE bird that God speaks of in His word. he says they are the ones He cares for and knows when they fall. THIS right here had always comforted my broken soul. When I would feel alone or fragile or afraid or inadequate, I would remember the sparrow. “So do not fear; YOU are more valuable than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:31)

His Eye On The Sparrow

My mother’s favorite song was, “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” The song was written in 1905 after the songwriter Civillia Martin met a bedridden and crippled couple, who shined bright for Jesus – in spite of, and maybe because of! When asked their secret to their unwavering joy, the simple response was, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.” (Heart drops in my throat.) How powerful is THAT?! And the rest is history. From that couple’s pain, came purpose for generations to come. It is a song for the ages; a song for my mother; a song for me. “I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”

“The bird also has found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, Even Your altars, O Lord of hosts, My King and my God.” (Psalm 84:3) These verses speak of a God caring and providing for the needs of – a bird. Amazing tender loving care. God is not too big to be mindful of the small.

Tiny Bird With Big Significance

Yesterday I was having a freak out worrisome moment which was threatening to drag me under. And at that exact moment, a current Christian song came on the radio, appropriately titled “Sparrows” by Jason Gray. The irony of all of it was NOT Lost to me. That the tiny bird that gave me hope way back in turbulent years when I needed to know my value, is the SAME tiny bird reminding me NOW that my value has NOT decreased. He still holds my tomorrows, like He held my yesterdays. God is STILL watching over me.

He who knows when a tiny bird falls, surely will NOT forget me. Nothing catches Him unaware. He has no forgetful moments. (Luke 12:6) “Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not ONE of them is forgotten before God.”

“If He can hold the world, He can hold this moment; not a field or flower escapes His notice. Oh- even the sparrow knows…” (Jason Gray, “Sparrows”)

What I love most about sparrows is the simplicity of how they relate to God and He relates to them. They know. They just know. I want that active in me, to just “be still, and KNOW.”

Sight & Sound Theatre is preparing to present its first-ever live broadcast show titled “Queen Esther.” The show has been scheduled to be a 9-month run in their 2,000-seat theatre in Pennsylvania. Its 434 performances premiered in March, right when the pandemic hit the U.S.

Due to the state lockdown orders, the production had to be halted. Over 550,000 tickets were all refunded. Recently, Sight & Sound has announced that they will push through to present the “Queen Esther” show in a different way.

The show will be available on Sight & Sound TV on September 4 at 7 PM. This will be the Christian theatre’s first-ever live broadcast.

Jessica Brown, who plays Queen Esther, reminisced about an incident when God reminded her to just be still.

“I was doing quiet time and God reminded me of this little incident that happened. So I had a dog, and she ran underneath the Christmas tree and she got stuck underneath the chords of the Christmas tree. I’m sitting there and I’m going, ‘If you just stop moving,’ because she’s pulling, trying to get out, and it kept getting tighter and tighter on her legs, I was like, ‘Stop moving, I will come over there and take the chords off of you,’” Jessica said.

She then continued to explain how that incident reflected her relationship with God.

“I feel like that’s how we are in life,” she continued. “We try to do things in our own strength and we pull and pull, and we go out and do crazy things because we’re trying to do things for ourselves, and we’re trying to fix it. All He’s telling us to do is just, ‘Stop, I’m going to come over there and I will untie the cords from your legs.’”
