be (verb) – to exist or live; to take place, happen, or occur; to occupy a place or position; to continue or remain as before; to belong
What a simple word…be. Be means to exist. Be means to live. Be means to take place. Be means to happen. Be means to occur. Be means to occupy a place. Be means to occupy a position. Be means to continue. Be means to remain as before. Be means to belong.
me (pronoun) – to refer to a person; the person speaking; objective form of I; to refer to self
Another simple word…me. Me means to refer to a person. Me means the person speaking. Me means I. Me means to refer to self.
Be me.
Two weeks ago the Holy Spirit spoke to me and gave me permission to “be me”. He’s been unpacking these two simple words over and over again ever since. As I encounter His presence and He speaks to me I’ve been learning that to “be” means I can stop trying so hard. I can stop striving. I can stop trying to earn the many things He’s already purchased for me on the cross. In exchange for my striving He’s given me a revelation of rest. Rest doesn’t mean doing nothing – it means doing things from a different perspective. Rest is an attitude of the heart – it’s full of trust and confidence that the One who has called you IS faithful and He will do it (see 1 Thessalonians 5:24). It’s also an attitude of the heart towards others – that two are better than one (see Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).
You see, God designed it this way. He is enough, however, built into God’s enoughness is a need for others. Father God needed Jesus to come and pay the price for sin to make a way for us to come back into His presence. Jesus needed Holy Spirit to come live inside of us and be our Counselor and Guide teaching and empowering us to walk in what He paid for. None of any of this would be possible if it weren’t for Father God creating everything in the first place. He did all of it for relationshipwith me…and you…
This brings me to the second part of the revelation – “me”. It’s amazing how such a small word can contain so much purpose and meaning and value. Me defines who I am…what I was created for…my destiny…and purpose and function here on earth. We are all called as “me” to love God and love others (see Matthew 22:36-39), but the manifestation of loving Him and loving others looks different coming out of each of us. Some of us sing and some of us write. Some of us are creative and some of us are analytical. There is no right or wrong when it comes to “me”, unless we’re trying to be something that we are not.
What freedom there is when we embrace the me that is us and we really give ourselves permission to just “be me”. It’ll change your life. Trust me I know. May you lay down all the things that you think you should be and the lies that keep trying to tell you what you’re not. May you embrace the truth of who He made you to be and give yourself permission to rest in who you are in Him…
