Valentine’s Day for Kids
In a Valentine’s Day special, entitled, “The Last “I Do” Adventures in Odyssey tells the story of St Valentine who boldly defied an edict that banned couples from getting married.
The plot contains thrills, chills, daring rescues, chases, and winning the heart of a beautiful girl! Surely that’s what Valentine’s Day is all about! At least it is before you hear the true story of St Valentine.
In The Last “I Do’, Connie receives a letter from “All Valentined Out,” who inquires about the purpose of Valentine’s Day and she responds by telling this story:
“It all began with a man named Valentine who was imprisoned for refusing to renounce his faith and give up his belief that the family is truly the backbone of society. While in prison, he met Julia, the blind daughter of the prison jailer. He prayed for her sight to be restored—and it was!
“The Emperor agreed to set Valentine free, if only Valentine would stop doing marriage ceremonies, and renounce his faith. Valentine said that he could not do either one.
Emperor Claudius asked Valentine what his God had ever done for him, Valentine replied that God healed Julia, while Claudius maintained it was Jupiter, their god, who healed Julia.
Julia and her father, however, believed Valentine, and they were both brought to Christ through the event. Valentine was executed on February 14. The church declared him a saint, and the day was dedicated in honor and memory of him.”
Connie uses this story to teach “All Valentined Out” that St. Valentine’s sacrifices have given us a reason to remember and celebrate those we love on February 14.
