A garbage collector is being hailed as a hero for saving an elderly couple trapped inside their house that was being engulfed by the raging fire.
On June 2, garbage collector Patrick Lebow was going through his usual route in Ceres, California collecting garbage from households. It was when he noticed a burning house and without any hesitation, he did something heroic.
“By the time we got there, which was a very fast response, there was heavy fire in the residence through the front and the back,” Ceres Fire Chief Kevin Wise said.
Upon seeing the fire, Patrick rushed through the burning house, kicked the front door, and helped an elderly couple to safety.
“He felt the need to act. He saw that they needed some help,” Kevin said.
Thanks to the heroic act of Patrick, the elderly couple was unharmed.
“He found a gentleman that was inside that looked possibly a little dazed and confused. He helped that gentlemen out of the house,” explained Wise. “And then he knew that there was somebody else in the house. So we went back looking again for his wife. And he located the wife in the backyard and helped her out of the house also.”
Patrick humbly declined being hailed as a hero because he believes that he only did what any loving human being could have done. He also said that he was “just in the right place, at the right time” to save the senior couple.
Real heroes who would go above and beyond what is expected still do exist amongst us. These heroes can be found in our neighborhood, in our offices, schools, and even in the streets. We can also be heroes for someone, we just have to be willing to extend our hands to those in need.
