Hobby Lobby CEO Gives Away Company To ‘Be Stewards Of What God Has Given Us’

Hobby Lobby CEO and founder David Green announced that he will be giving away his company to be a good steward of what God has given him.

David made the decision to give up his ownership of the Christian-owned company to honor God. The owner of the Christian clothing company Patagonia inspired him to choose God over his company. Recently, Yvon Chouinard gave up his ownership over Patagonia to allow God’s mission and purpose to remain intact.

“Patagonia’s founder recently made news when he gave away the ownership in his company to allow the mission and purpose to remain intact… I experienced a similar decision-making process with my ownership of Hobby Lobby; I chose God,” David said in an interview.

In an interview with “Fox & Friends Weekend” on Sunday, he explained that he wanted to be a steward of what God has given him. David will be giving up his company after five decades since he founded Hobby Lobby in 1972.

“There’s a huge paradigm change between owning a company and stewarding it. We want to be stewards of what God has given us,” he said.

One of the reasons he decided to give up his company is to lessen the burden of wealth.

“Wealth can be a curse and, in most cases, if you drill down on it, wealth is a curse in terms of marriage, children, and things of that nature; so we’re stewarding our company and, therefore, our children come to work, and they get what they earn… it’s a paradigm change from ownership that can really wreck a family,” he explained. “You own it, then we’re going to steward it.”

The 80-year-old Christian entrepreneur emphasized the importance of the Bible for every business owner and leader.

“For me, my source of truth has always been prayer and the Bible. I truly believe that if leaders pray and seek truth from the Bible that their businesses will be revolutionized,” he wrote. “…The biggest challenge is to ask the question of whether you are an owner or a steward. A manager of what you’ve been entrusted with.”

Hobby Lobby Shares The Gospel In Full-Page Newspaper Ad During Easter

Hobby Lobby shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a full-page newspaper ad during the recent Easter holiday.

The Christian family-owned arts-and-crafts retail shared the true meaning of Easter by printing a full-page advertisement in newspapers nationwide. In the ad is a photo of an actor portraying Jesus Christ, carrying a sheep in his arms. A huge text that reads, “His Love Endures Forever,” was written on it as the headlines.

Beneath the headline is a popular Bible verse about God’s love and our salvation, John 3:16.

“For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” -John 3:16

Full-page newspaper ad

The ad also told readers how can they be saved and become believers of Jesus Christ. A link to a free downloadable Bible was also included for the readers.

“If you would like to know Jesus as Lord and Savior, visit Need Him Ministry at ChatAboutJesus.com/.”

The full-page holiday posting of Hobby Lobby began over two decades ago. It started after founder David Green saw a newspaper advertisement about Christmas that has little to no content about the Gospel, the true message of the holiday. He “felt commissioned by God to do something different,” thus, he started to print full-page ads about the Gospel during every holiday season.

“Hobby Lobby was selling all kinds of crafts that customers used to celebrate Christmas, yet David Green was struck by the lack of any testimony in newspapers regarding the meaning of the holiday,” the website says.

The first-ever newspaper ad run by the Hobby Lobby was in 1996 which encourages readers to have a relationship with God.

“As you celebrate this Christmas season in the warmth of family and home, may you be drawn to the Savior; He who left the beauty of Heaven on our behalf and became like us, that we might become like Him. If you know Jesus as your Savior, then this season already has a special meaning. If you do not, we encourage you to find a Bible-believing church in your community, and to discover a relationship this Christmas with the God who loves you more than you can begin to imagine.”

Hobby Lobby President Steve Green talks about the Bible in an interview about his new book “This Beautiful Book”.

Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. is a private Oklahoma-based corporation which owns a chain of American arts and crafts stores. David Green originally founded it as the Hobby Lobby Creative Centers in August 1972. Now with, over 822 retail stores, the success of Hobby Lobby is clearly evident. However, behind their success is a faithful God who has been with them since the beginning.

David, who grew up in a family of preachers, founded the company on strong biblical principles.

“We’re Christians and we run our business on Christian principles,” the founder and CEO, David, said.

Today, Hobby Lobby president Steve Green, David’s son, openly talks about the Bible in his book, “This Beautiful Book”.

When asked about the success of the retail store, Steve talked about having their family as their number one priority. Being built and run by the Green family, they clearly treasure family more than anything else.

“Their family is more important than this business and they need to be sure to take care of their family first and then Hobby Lobby second,” Steve said. “Part of our success is the fact that we do have our priorities right as best as we can.”

The Bible

Steve Green also emphasized that the Bible offers something greater that every person needs.

“We hope that people will come to understand that there really is something about this book that we celebrate, the Bible,” Steve said. “Hopefully, people will look to this book to see that there is a God that loves them.”

Steve also related the Bible to politics, sports, business, market, economy and wealth.

“Wealth can be a distraction or a diversion and can be a trap for people so it’s something that you have to be very careful with.”

David Green is an American businessman and the founder of Hobby Lobby, a highly successful chain of arts and crafts stores. He comes from a long line of preachers and says he’s built his business squarely on the Bible. “We’re Christians and we run our business on Christian principles,” he says.

According to Wikipedia, David who was born in 1941, lives in Oklahoma City with his wife, Barbara. They have three children. Two work for the business. Their son Steve is the president of Hobby Lobby and their daughter, Darsee is the company’s creative director.

Their son, Mart is also the founder of a Christian business, Mardel Christian and Educational Supply and Every Tribe Entertainment. The family is also the financial backer of Museum of The Bible and Steve is the museum’s president.

From ‘rags to riches’

In 1970, while a store manager David borrowed just $600 to start a home business, Greco Products which turned out to be a runaway success. From his garage, he assembled and sold tiny picture frames which were highly popular at the time. After doing this part-time for two years, David and his wife were able to open their own shop in Oklahoma City, the first Hobby Lobby store!

Five years later he was able to leave his job and open a second store with 6,000 square feet of space. From there the business just grew and grew. It now has over 800 stories with some 37,500 employees.

Supreme Court Win

As a devout Christian, the Hobby Lobby founder is not afraid to make a stand for what he believes. In 2014 he won a Supreme Court case that exempted “closely held” companies with strong religious beliefs from providing employees the morning-after pill.

Real-time net worth is $7.6 billion

As of April 14, 2019, Davids real-time net worth is said to be $7.6 billion according to Forbes magazine. Though close to 80 David still serves as Hobby Lobby’s CEO and goes to work six days a week. He and his family spent $500 million on the Museum of the Bible, which opened in Washington, DC in 2017.

“We are an arts and crafts store, and I think God calls us to be the best we can and then use our influence however we can and to run our company in such a way that is pleasing to the Lord. The way you treat your people, how you use your finances, all those things, God will be pleased with.”

David honors God with his life and with his business. He considers it as a ministry where he can influence people for God. From spending thousands each year to advertise the Gospel in newspapers during Christmas and Easter; to playing Christian music in his stores; closing on Sundays and altogether operating his business according to Biblical principles. There’s no doubt why God made him a billionaire!
