Pastor John Bevere recently shared about 5 major hindrances to hearing God’s voice and why believers can’t hear Him.

Hearing God’s Voice

For a believer, God’s Word is our lifeline. As it says in Scripture, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4, ESV).

The good news is, God willingly speaks to people who diligently seek Him. His words and instructions are not hidden from us, but need to be sought to be heard.

Pastor John Bevere wrote, “If God seems silent to you, it could be that there are things hindering you from hearing His voice.”

5 Major Hindrances to Hearing God’s Voice I

He then shared the common 5 major hindrances to hearing God’s voice.

1. Distractions

“We’re distracted when our attention isn’t focused on the right thing. This is the most common blocker to hearing God’s voice.”

2. Competing Voices

“These voices come in the form of screens, work, relationships, media, and more. God rewards those who diligently – not casually – seek Him. We must actively make room to spend time with God.”

3. An Unprepared Heart

“When your heart is filled with fear and anxiety, God’s voice will become stifled. Spending time in Scripture and prayer will keep our hearts sensitive to God’s voice.”

4. A Heart That Isn’t Neutral

“When we desire something more than God, it’s nearly impossible to hear His voice and follow His direction.”

5 Major Hindrances to Hearing God’s Voice II

5. Deliberate Disobedience

“Sin hardens our hearts, and when our hearts are hard, our ears are closed. The good news is that our hearts are softened through repentance. It gives us eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to understand.”

It is not too late to ask for God’s forgiveness for allowing these hindrances to stop you from hearing God. From this day forward, it is our prayer that you will be vigilant and more aware of His voice above anything else.

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8, NIV).

Focus On Christ In You

Christ in you is our hope of glory, Col 1:27. What a powerful verse to dispel all our fears. The devil hates to hear this. He comes and distracts us with symptoms and external distractions. Yet our hope is Christ in us. We can defeat the devil with this one word, Jesus. His Name and presence in us will drive every demonic attack from us. The devil does not reside in you. He deceives us into thinking that he controls us. However, if Jesus is Lord then the devil is a victim. Jesus is our hope and no devil can overcome us through worldly distractions and physical symptoms. All we need to do is focus our attention on Jesus in us.

Distractions

Most of us are so distracted by symptoms. This can come in the form of physical symptoms or symptoms due to environmental issues. Car problems and relationship problems and work problems top the list. These are distractions that keep us from keeping Jesus as the focus of our attention. Distractions keep us from our central focus. When we choose to ignore the devil he will mostly leave us. A barking dog will only continue to bark if we give it our attention. Ignore it and it will stop barking and go for another victim. We need to keep Christ in the center of our lives always and ignore distractions. This does not mean that we don’t get medical attention when required. We need to discern and address distractions accordingly.

Example

Recently I developed some symptoms of tingling numbness in my fingers suddenly. I ignored it for two months. Nothing happened. I decided to get medical advice and got some investigations done. The investigations revealed that I had a prolapsed disc in my neck. The neurosurgeon recommended surgical intervention. I decided to see if physiotherapy could remedy the symptoms. So far there is a marked improvement in symptoms. I now am ignoring the symptoms and concentrating on doing the exercises. I am also seeking a second neurosurgical opinion. In most occasions, our symptoms are just a red flag to something not right. Don’t let that distract us from Christ in us who is our Healer and Deliverer.

Peri or Circumstances

In this episode of GOD TV’s “It’s All Greek To Me,” Chris shares the meaning of the ancient Greek word “peri” or translated as “circumstances.”

Our circumstances differ from time to time. It could either be positive or negative. And Paul the Apostle mentioned “peri” in his letter to Colossians.

He wrote in Colossians 4:7-8. “Tychicus, a beloved brother, a faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts.”

Now, in this verse, Chris points out the Apostle Paul’s love towards the church in Colossae.

“If a messenger from the Apostle Paul was sent to know your circumstance, I want you to understand that God already knows your circumstances,” he remarked. “And that is an incredible truth that should release you from all the pressures.”

According to the “It’s All Greek To Me” host, when you acknowledge that God is fully aware of your circumstance, it will bring drastic change to your life.

“Your circumstances are nothing for God. He knows what your circumstances are,” Chris further added. He also encouraged the people to stop acting as if God doesn’t know about your situation because God knows every detail of your life.

And Chris stressed that God can send faithful ministers to help and comfort you because He knows.
