Don’t forget to celebrate. Did you know that celebration is actually one of the classic spiritual disciplines in church history? I think that’s so beautiful. I think a lot of times when we think about spiritual disciplines, we think about things that, you know, are more, you know, reading your Bible, praying, fasting, meditating on the word, all those things. But celebration is in there as well.
And I just love that, because it brings some levity. It invites us to be in a place of joy with the Lord. When we stop and we start to celebrate the things that God is doing, I believe it also helps us in our mental capacity to remember what God has done. It creates new pathways in our brain to start to expect the good to happen. When we make a big deal out of things that happen for us, a breakthrough that we are able to walk in, it creates this new expectation in our hearts for God to do the same again.
So it’s not only just because it’s a spiritual discipline, but it’s also good for us mentally. I think as well, when we can learn how to have a little bit more fun sometimes, you know, as being a Christian, I think sometimes we can be a little bit too serious about things, but when we are engaging in the spiritual discipline of celebration, we learn to have more joy. We learn to, you know, not just celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, but celebrate, you got a new job, or your friend got a new job, or your friend got into a relationship, or they’re getting married, or they’re pregnant. Celebrate those things. Get together, make a bigger deal out of things.
You know, it doesn’t have to be such a big thing every time. We can celebrate the big and the little and all the good things that God does for us. So I just encourage you today to really engage with celebration, a lifestyle of celebration, and I promise you, you will see so much more joy and anticipation for good in your life.
