‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Actor Wants The ‘Name Of Christ In Movie Theaters’

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” actor Alan Ritchson wants more faith-based films to succeed at the box office saying he wanted the name of Jesus Christ to be in movie theaters.

Alan is known for his edgy roles in “Reacher” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” but what only a few knew is about his passion for faith-based content in films. He will be starring in “Ordinary Angels,” an upcoming Christian film by the creators of “Jesus Revolution,” Kingdom Story.

“Ordinary Angels” will be about the true story of a family facing medical problems and a single mom who asked a church for help. It is scheduled to be released on October 13 this year. According to Alan, this is a story of how God uses broken people to fulfill His mission.

“God continually shows up in our world in a way that kind of boggles our mind,” Alan said. “Because we, for whatever reason, I think we continue to buy into the idea that … God chooses heroes to do His work. And it’s just never been the case. It’s the broken and dysfunctional that God proves His power and strength through. And this a story of that, too. It’s important that we remember that those who maybe struggle to follow the rules, who don’t look like the perfect Christians, who are the broken, are the people that whom God has a funny way of expressing Himself. And that story is very much told in ‘Ordinary Angels.'”

He admitted that many Hollywood executives focus only on the earnings of these faith-based films, rather than the message it conveys. However, that “doesn’t change the fact that people are hearing the name of Christ in movie theaters.” “The Hunger Games” actor then asked everyone to support faith-based films.

“And if that’s where the pulpit is for people who wouldn’t normally step foot in a church, then that’s still a great way to have that conversation,” Alan said. “ … It matters that these films get supported.”

The Passion of the Christ: The Resurrection

Directed by Mel Gibson, this is the sequel of the 2004 blockbuster Christian film “The Passion Of The Christ”. While the previous film features the last hours of our Lord Jesus Christ, this upcoming film will be centered on His resurrection.

Redeeming Love

This film, produced by Roma Downey and Cindy Bond, is the adaptation of the bestselling novel Redeeming Love.

“The story reflects the redemptive power of unconditional and sacrificial love with characters and circumstances relevant to the contemporary world,” the film’s synopsis reads.

Jesus Revolution

Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company have teamed up to produce this film. It will show the spiritual awakening that happened in the 1970s in Southern California known as the Jesus movement.

Unbreakable Boy

A film based on the book The Unbreakable Boy was written by the father of a boy with autism. The story will be centered on the faith of Iowan Austin LeRette, a boy who lived not only with autism but also with a rare bone disease.

Courageous

Award-winning filmmakers Alex and Stephen Kendrick will be re-releasing the 2011 blockbuster film “Courageous” with new surprise scenes and ending. Viewers “will get to see what happens to many of the characters 10 years later! It’s a new ending with a few surprises!”

A Week Away

Netflix will also be releasing their first-ever faith-based musical film! The film will feature contemporary Christian music hits while narrating the story of a troubled young man whose life is transformed.

Journey To Hell

This film was also adapted from the bestselling classic novel Journey To Hell by John Bunyan. Like the book, the film will also tell the story of a man who finds redemption after and encounter with hell.

“The film is very uplifting in the end,” film director Tim Chey said. “We have a happy ending compared to Bunyan’s version. But we show Hell in all its darkness and hopefully will make people think of a literal biblical Hell.”

7 New Christian Movies To Watch This Summer And Fall

Despite the global pandemic, faith-based films continue to inspire and uplift the souls of millions online. And this coming summer and fall, new Christian movies will once again touch the hearts of millions.

Movie theaters are closed nowadays due to state lockdowns in response to COVID-19. However, this led to streaming services that movie producers offer to audiences online.

And this coming summer and fall, some new Christian movies will “spearhead the reopening of movie theaters in the U.S.”, while other films will be streamed online.

Here’s a list of the seven new Christian Movies to watch out for:

1. Switched

“Switched” is a faith-based film that will be released on Sept. 4. The movie is about Cassandra Evans and Katie Sharp who woke up one day discovering that “they’ve switched bodies.”

The synopsis reads, “Tired of being bullied, Cassandra Evans prays that her nemesis Katie Sharp, the queen bee of social media, would know what it’s like to walk a day in her shoes. Her prayer is answered in an unexpected way when they get ‘Switched.’”

“When Cassandra Evans and Katie Sharp wake up to discover they’ve switched bodies, the two girls must learn to appreciate both the blessings and struggles the other faces on a daily basis, in school, and at home. 2. Queen Esther

Apparently, the “Queen Esther” live performance was “scheduled for its nine-month run in the 2,000-seat theater at Sight & Sound’s studio in Pennsylvania.” But due to COVID-19 restrictions, it was halted. Hence, the stage production will present its “first-ever live worldwide broadcast” on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. Eastern time.

Katie Miller, Sight & Sound corporate communications manager told CP earlier this month, “This year has been incredibly challenging, but we continue to see the faithfulness of God each step of the way. After canceling over 200 shows, and knowing that hundreds of thousands of people would not be able to experience the powerful message of ‘Queen Esther,’ we knew we had to do something.”

Then she added, “With the future still uncertain, not knowing when we will be able to welcome full crowds again, we prayerfully began walking toward the idea of the first-ever live broadcast of a Sight & Sound show. We are so thrilled to be taking this next step of extending the ministry beyond our walls and offering ‘Queen Esther Live!'”

3. The Order Of Rights

“The Order Of Rights” is a pro-life film that will be released on October 2 on the streaming platforms of Amazon, Google, and VUDU. The movie centers on the main character Emma Stein who is “a pregnant single girl who has been advised by her mother to have an abortion despite the objection of the child’s young Christian father, Ethan Carpenter.”

The synopsis reads, “Even as Ethan tries to help her, she decides to go ahead with terminating the pregnancy. Ethan and his family file a lawsuit on behalf of the child’s right to life, and their story moves to prominence as a nationally publicized court case. The court has to decide whether the child in Emma’s womb is a person or not, and if so, is it endowed with the inalienable rights as enumerated in the Declaration of Independence.”

The movie will be available on streaming platforms of Amazon, Google, and VUDU.

4. ‘Small Group The Movie’

‘Small Group The Movie’ is centered on the perspective of a skeptic person who joins a small group in the church. It will be coming out on October 6 on “Digital Rent/Buy via Amazon and iTunes.” As well as “GooglePlay, Vudu, Redbox, Christian Cinema and on DVD via Amazon and other major online platforms.”

Filmmaker Matt Chastain told The Christian Post:

“In 2014, my wife and I had joined a small group at our church. The whole experience just felt so much more real and genuine and interactive than other church experiences I’d had. It was early on, maybe in the second meeting. When I was kind of given the idea: this is a story that needs to be told! Somebody oughta make a movie called ‘Small Group’! Being too dumb to know what an undertaking it would actually be to do it right. I decided to write a screenplay and make a movie!”

5. ‘Never Again’

The movie “Never Again” is a documentary film educating the younger generation “about the history and horrors of modern-day anti-Semitism.”

Christians United for Israel, the largest pro-Israel organization in the U.S founder and chairman, Pastor John Hagee, said in a statement:

“Anti-Semitism is not just a Jewish problem, it’s everyone’s problem. And as Christians, we are mandated by God to stand beside our Jewish brothers and sisters and confront this abomination. Anti-Semitism is evil, and as Christians, we are commanded to fight for good. Anti-Semitism is the personification of darkness and as Christians, we must shine the light. This film brings to Christians a never before seen understanding of anti-Semitism. And explains what we as believers can and must do to rid our society of the world’s oldest hatred.”

The movie will be released on October 13 and 15 in 800 theaters.

6. ‘2 Hearts’

The movie ‘2 Hearts’ is a romance film. It “tells the true story of two couples whose journeys lead them to a life-saving miracle of love and purpose.” Moreover, it showcases how God powerfully moves in a tragic situation, reminding us that He is always in control.

It will be on theaters on October 16.

7. ‘When We Last Spoke’

The film ‘When We Last Spoke’ centers on a heartwarming story of “family, friendship, and forgiveness.”According to CP, it will show in theaters for two nights only, Oct. 27 and 29.
‘When We Last Spoke’ follows the “lovable and nutty family of sisters Juliet and Evangeline.”

The synopsis reads:
‘When We Last Spoke’ gives viewers an insight into the beauty of the Cranbournes as they journey through the ups and downs of their unexpected situation. Life for Juliet and Evangeline changes quickly after their father James departs to fight in the Vietnam War. And their mother, who feels ill-equipped to raise two daughters alone, leaves them with their grandparents. Together, the family learns how to overcome heartbreak and uncertainty. “I Still Believe” Becomes 1st Faith-Based Film To Air Nationally In IMAX

The upcoming Christian movie “I Still Believe” is about to make history in the IMAX screens. It will be the first faith-based film to be aired nationally.

I Still Believe (PG) is about the real life story of the Christian singer Jeremy Camp. It tells of the romance he had with his first wife, Melissa, who died of ovarian cancer. Their love story was the inspiration for the song “I Still Believe.” The film will have its premiere March 11 in IMAX. And will play nationally on March 13 in IMAX theaters.

Full-Length Faith-Based Feature Film

Kanye West’s 38 minute film Jesus Is King was able to make it to IMAX theaters last year too. However, it is the first time that a full-length faith-based feature film will be in IMAX.

Co-director, Jon Erwin said, “After the success of I Can Only Imagine, our dream has been to expand the possibilities of what faith-based films can become.”

He believes that what they are doing, along with his brother, is a significant step forward for the Christian film genres.

“It’s so exciting to partner with IMAX to immerse the audience in faith and music in a whole new way. It’s a first for a faith film, and we can’t wait for the audience to experience I Still Believe in IMAX,” he told Christian Headlines.

The Actors Of “I Still Believe”

The new film stars well-known actors K.J. Apa of “Riverdale,” “The Hate U Give” as Jeremy Camp and Britt Robertson of “Tomorrowland” and “The Space Between Us” as Melissa Camp. Also, Gary Sinise (Apollo 13), singer Shania Twain, Melissa Roxburgh (Manifest) and Cameron Arnett (Overcomer) have supporting roles.

Currently, the Christian film was deemed No. 1 on Seventeen Magazine’s list of “7 Most Romantic Movies Premiering in 2020.”

“I Still Believe” producer Kevin Downes hopes that the film will reach the younger generation.

“And I believe that this film is going to do that – mainly because the cast is gonna really allow an opportunity for that younger audience. To want to come in and experience an emotional true love story,” he said in an interview with Christian Headlines. “But what’s great is our foundation, our basis, is the Bible.”

Lizzie, Labeled The ‘World’s Ugliest Woman’, Was Lost Until She Watched “Overcomer”

In the past few years, Lizzie Velasquez rose to fame after sharing her story to TEDxAustinWomen Talk titled “How Do YOU Define Yourself”. This opened many amazing opportunities for her to share her story. She also garnered thousands of followers on her social media accounts. But little did we know that she was lost and struggling. Not until she watched the Christian movie “Overcomer”.

She Was Labeled the ‘World’s Ugliest Woman’ But God Turned Her into an Amazing Princess

Lizzie has inspired millions of people through her talks and YouTube vlogs. Many lives were encouraged in the book she wrote “Dare To Be Kind” which addresses self-acceptance, and love. She’s also a passionate advocate of anti-bullying. And she’s been doing this for over 10 years. However, things were still difficult for Lizzie.

Lost And Scared

On August 8, she posted a transparent video on her YouTube account. In the video she broke down in a vulnerable moment with her followers. It was way out of the usual content she normally shows. And it has been five months since the last time she posted a video.

“I’m nervous,” Lizzie said.

Then she revealed the reason why she no longer posts anything about her life.

“It was a choice that I think I made because I just have been lost,” she admitted.

Then she continued saying, “For this entire year I have felt lost, scared, vulnerable and ashamed. I have felt so defeated.”

“Why am I feeling like this? Why is my life so different now? What’s been going on?” these are the questions Lizzie have always asked herself.

It wasn’t until she watched the faith-based film “Overcomer” that she was able to get breakthrough. 

Finding Hope Again

After watching the movie, her eyes were opened. “That movie is what has given me the courage and the reminder. And leading me to the answers that I’ve been searching for all year long,” she described while in tears.

Then Lizzie shared the greatest lesson she learned about the movie. And she started with asking herself, “Lizzie, who are you? I would say I’m a daughter, a friend, a dog mom. I’m a speaker. I’m an author”

“I think the answer I’ve been looking for is realizing that I have been allowing my successes and my accomplishments define me,” she continued. “Because I thought I’m not speaking as much or I haven’t come out with a new book yet. I’m not gaining all these followers like I used to. I lost who I was. I lost my identity in that.”

She then quoted one line from the movie, “When something other than Christ becomes our goal, our goal becomes our God.”

A Life-Changing Movie For Lizzie

It was an eye-opener for her, “For me it’s so true. Everything else had higher importance to me than my faith.”

Lizzie realized that “Knowing that just because things have been different this year doesn’t mean that I am less than, doesn’t mean that I’m not good enough. Doesn’t mean that I’m never going to accomplish anything again. I keep reminding myself that God will always find a way to make you sit down until He’s ready for you to stand back up again.”

She described how the film changed her heart and gave her freedom. “But whatever happens next, it’s going to be because I put all of my faith and everything that I have back in Jesus. And it feels so good!”

Placing Your Worth In Christ Alone

And she ended her video leaving a word for her viewers, “When you find your identity in the One who created you, it will change your whole perspective.”

Just like we are a work in progress, Lizzie is too. There will be times in our life that we get distracted because of blessings but let us not forget to whom we belong. More than anything we gain in this world, nothing can compare to God.

Terrence Malick Is Making A Jesus Movie

Terrence Malick, the director/writer/producer know for his spiritually-minded films such as The Tree of Life, To The Wonder, The Thin Red Line, and his latest drama A Hidden Life, is set to make a more overtly Christian film. The Last Planet will tell the story of Jesus through a series of parables.

Actors Mark Rylance, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Géza Röhrig have been cast in the three principal roles as Satan, Simon Peter and Jesus, respectively

Christians and cinephiles find common holy ground in Malick’s work with his masterful interweaving of spiritual breadth and cinematic beauty. A Hidden Life which comes out this December is already being praised. The film tells the true story of Franz Jägerstätter an Austrian who refused to fight for the Nazis during World War II because of his Christian faith. In the film Terrence explores the themes of duty, nationalism, family, submission to papal authority, and sacrificial love.

While Terrence Malick’s work might not find it’s way into the Faith-based Films category, there are many who see his films as just that.

“All that said, I believe Malick’s cinema is not vaguely or ambivalently religious or spiritual but is, in fact, distinctly and explicitly Christian,” wrote David Roark for RogerEbert.com.

“More specifically, I believe Malick’s films are evangelical; they function as cinematic ‘liturgies’ that seek to orient the hearts and minds of viewers toward the Christian story—a way of seeing and interacting with God and the world—helping us, as Private Witt says in The Thin Red Line, recover the good within us and reach out to touch the glory.”

The Last Planet will continue telling the Christian story in Terrence’s beautiful way. While he hasn’t given much in terms of plot, we’re sure to see Christian themes represented and hopefully a Jesus who resembles the Jesus of the Gospels.
