Throughout history there have been several Christianity Movements which have defined the Christian church in America. The Shepherding Movement of the late 1970’s established organizational structure for church leaders to counter the risk of cult like behaviors from the Charismatic Movement. My introduction to this type of church began with learning about Jesus, my identity, and my purpose. But I was also being trained to submit to a man’s authority called a spiritual covering. I was to understand the importance of a man’s spiritual covering to be in good standing with God. In addition, this covering would protect me from deception and provide me with necessary accountability to fall in line.
A Man’s Authority
Being young and rebellious I needed this type of structure, but as my relationship with Jesus grew deeper the Holy Spirit began to convict my commitment to an organization called church instead of The Church of Jesus Christ. Internally I had questions I could not answer, “Why do I struggle to produce good fruit? Why is my Pastor chosen to lead and I am not? Why am I not good enough to lead?”
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalms 91:1 NKJV)
Do not stay stagnant in a man’s authority called a spiritual covering. We are God’s child, that is our identity, He is our spiritual father, He is our covering. The scripture clearly demonstrates we are to submit ourselves to the covering of God, which is Jesus Christ. So why does the 21-century Church teach about a spiritual leader’s covering? I love my Pastors and I do not question their commitment to God or the fruit they produce. Unfortunately, teaching Christians to submit to a spiritual covering of a man creates a false control and lazy Christians.
The Shepherding Movement created a generation of men that lack spiritual authority to battle against the schemes of the devil. Men today struggle to fight “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12 NIV) They rely on their Pastors to train their children, uplift their wives, and fight their spiritual battles. Men need to put on their spiritual armor and get into the good fight of faith. Rise up mighty warrior of God, the Kingdom of Heaven needs you.
I challenge you to consider spiritual covering and explore your personal conviction. The Lord has more for you, and He wants to take you to the next glory, but it will require stepping out of your comfort zone.
